So I have a question on what the community thinks the line on copying work is. Let's say I really love the Tiger Palace $25 blurple bear claw. If I were to buy that design from Tina with a web mold and custom label, would that be over the line or fair game?

What about taking a bunch of different chips and doing the same? (Just colors with different mold and label).

After all Tiger Palace is a dupe on Paulson, so does the maker have any real right to the chip colors? What about the series?

Some would say Tiger Palace themselves were copying other chip color patterns. ;)

That seems like an odd solution. Honestly, my dream set is a Tina set mixing Tiger Palace and Kodiak bear claw designs with my own house labels (web or sun mold). Kodiak is an open design here, but is using a few Tiger Palace designs for the set considered a faux pas?

You might just ask the designer, he’s a nice guy. @JeepologyOffroad

He could probably steer you towards something similar

Really depends on the person judging if they think it’s a faux pas or not.

Some folks are ok with some Tina molds but not others. Some folks have issues with copies of “live” chips and others think that no chip color, inlay or spot pattern should be replicated.

But if you do what you want and like for your game that’s all that matters. Chip on brother!

Oh. Okay then. That blurple 25 is probably my favorite chip design of all time but I can't be spending car down payments on chips. It would be great to reproduce it in a way that would never be misinterpreted to be an actual Tiger Palace chip.

So some people actually think that all spot/color combos ever used on chips are now off the table? LOL ok, that certainly limits things for new chippers. :ROFLMAO:

Just get what you like. At least anyone who has previously designed or ordered so called tribute chips (copies) has no business getting upset about this or telling you what to do IMO.

Add the chip to your set, add your own label. Good to go. Zero issue whatsoever imo.

It’s only poor taste if copying the full set when I specifically requested to not do so. Glad you like the chips and I do appreciate the thoughtfulness, but yeah non issue using the chip in your bearclaw set man. Enjoy.

If you want to adjust the Kodiak design, send a DM to @tallsbutler as he’s the designer and he might be able to help if he’s ok with it. I was previously considering having some sets made based on his Kodiak designs, and asked if he could make slight adjustments to denominations etc (I’ve paid for him to do other label design work).

I deleted the rest of my comments as I’m not an authority on the ‘line’, but I’m sure this forum will gladly share its views with you on it.

Awesome! Thanks for being cool about it!
You're good to go now that Jeep has given his blessing, but I would say as a general rule, most people don't get bent out of shape over creating a tribute of base and spot colors with custom labels. With the caveat that you probably shouldn't copy an entire set. Especially a custom set created by another PCF member. As far as copying actual casino sets, that one is more divisive, with some thinking it's perfectly okay, and others completely against it.

Also realize that Tina's will not be able to exactly duplicate many Paulson colors anyway. Blaze Orange and Arc Yellow are literally impossible to duplicate. Same with some of the CPC Dayglo colors. So even an attempt at a tribute with Tina chips is very unlikely to pass as the original.

In the same context of this post, I have come across the PCF hall of fame and loved a lot of those designs. Has anyone worked with the individuals that created those designs? And would it be offensive to get them made into a Tina chip?

These are my favorites, but I would never do anything with them without the permission of the designer.

I would point you to Mr.Jeep’s note above for the likely answer.

A bit different here. It would be very disheartening to see my personal CPC customs turned into Tina’s. New label or not.

A major part of the allure and beauty of CPC is creating something uniquely yours and one of a kind. Everyone gets to decide how much or how little time and effort they put into their personal design. It’s the epitome of creativity in chipping.

I always tell people that come to me wanting to copy my personal customs - yes, they are beautiful and I love them too obviously, but I promise something just as beautiful, better even, can be created that they will appreciate even more due to it being a set they spent their time and effort on and is uniquely theirs as well.

But people seem to usually want the quick and easy route to “success” these days rather than do the work themselves. Part of the reason I haven’t shared my newest CPC set to be frank. Which sucks because that’s part of the fun of chipping - sharing the creativity with each other and having a good time on here. But oh well. Turning into a grumpy old chipper too I guess.

I would do things to be able to buy a similar set to this...

All it takes is time and effort. Same thing it took me to be able to buy them. Well… and some disregard for cash of course

Also - I am happy offer consulting on designs if it’s not someone’s thing. No charge either if it’s just a question or 2

1. Don't turn a persons CPC or other original set into a Tina set.

2. Chip colors, edge spot combinations, and edge spot designs are not "protected" under some law or copyright, so choosing to make your own label design to go with color combos you like is fair game.

3. If you like a set of chips "as-is" then buy that set. If you are making it custom then you should be able to find enough "uniqueness and originality" to have it stand apart from the original. The set that inspired me to begin making customs is still my favorite set ever made, but I found ways to honor that set without copying everything... I changed enough of it so that it is in the same "family" of look and feel but doesn't really look like the original custom set.

Thanks for your response here! I am still new to the custom world. @Okku designed me a custom label and chip over the past month and I am working with Justin on a Tina order. Still having the internal, mental battle of how much $ to invest in this hobby.

I already lose too much at poker and table games... Mrs. Emunster, aka the accountant, can only put up with so much...
