Hello everyone,
I've been surfing the forum for a while looking to upgrade from my current metal slug cash set! My budget is under $500 as i'm still a broke college student haha. I'm not willing to spend more than that. Ideally I'd be in the 300-400 price range.

Denominations wise: My home game has stakes from 25c50c to $1$3. And we like to play with a decent amount of fracs because it feels cool to have more chips in front of you haha even though I know the standard here is 100 fracs.

Ideally we'd have

200x25c
300x$1
300x$5
200x25$

I've looked around the class fields but haven't really peaked any interest yet. Would love some help for you guys!

Here's a picture of my current and first ever set! Love it. But definitely want to upgrade!

1000 chips at $500 budget max, search for “Tina Group Buy”

Those are within the budget and definitely an upgrade over your existing set.
Agreed with @LeLe for the quantity x price, recommend checking out Tina Hybrids (I think @justincarothers also sells samples):

Thank you for the replies! I've definitely looked into Tina's and they're my front runner for what I might end up getting. Only thing that's pushing me off is the long wait time... maybe someone on PCF has a Tina set no longer in use and will sell it to me.

The wait ends up being half the fun.. something to look forward to.

One of my sets are the nexgen’s classics that @surfik recommended:

I’m partial to the nexgen’s, I think better than the heavier 13.5g chips but below the Tina Hybrid option in terms of feel etc, you can choose the denoms and quantities for 1000 chips ~$220. The newer ‘remix’ i haven’t tried, but the colors look more vibrant (some of the higher denom colors I have looked a bit faded/washed out):

This could leave room in your budget for some other goodies. Lots of options on poker mats, although could be questionable on what size/ layout etc

I have this one now for the dining table, $100:

Some deals for round ~$70

Just posted it in the Classifieds
I think the set is amazing and i'm actually really tempted haha. Just want to look at other options on the more budget friendly side but I think the value you're selling them at makes me more tempted. If I don't make up my mind/end up buying GLWS!

Every newcomer that comes here doesn't want to "wait that long". Take it from EVERYONE here...wait the 8 weeks and get something you will be happy with. Don't rush it and risk getting something you could very likely be dissatisfied with and waste your money. So my recommendation is find a nice set in classifieds or put an order in and wait 8-10 weeks for something special. Best wishes on your journey!

Great advice, I think I just like the part where I can interact with other users and maybe work something out or find a gem in the classfields. being that I don't see myself buying another set after...... I hope lol

The Tina hybrids are absolutely worth the wait. In fact, the card molds were worth the wait for me, and I'm even considering a no-mold set next.

And regarding your "I don't see myself buying another set..."

You should also take into consideration the future value. As soon as you get that delivery from tina - the value of those chips are greatly diminished - hard to recoup costs if you ever want to move on to a different set whereas the sets in the classifieds hold their value allowing for an option to recover funds spent in the future.

You play 25¢/50¢ with no quarters and 40x50¢?

Those Paulsons that @dazoki posted are nice. Real clay Paulsons, under $1/chip. At those prices, you can probably get your money back if you upgrade in the future. But for now, that is a legit set. Just don't play on a hard surface life a dining room table.

Just a thought for consideration..

Do you have a nicer poker table (e.g. Barrington)? Custom play mat? Nice plastic playing cards? Your players likely won't notice the nicer chips, but definitely will on a table for instance.

IMO you may be best suited to upgrade those other pieces before you go for more chips given limited budget, stakes (whicb will likely change once you're not as broke), and already have a decent set for college. But if already upgraded, ignore!

I use the $25 as quarters momentarily and the $50 as 50c. Doing what works for me on a set I was able to afford at the time starting my new home game. Of course my friends didn't complain as I was the only one that was willing to put the money down on a new set for the whole group. However, I was looking into getting a new set for the reason of having more fracs that actually say cents instead of them saying dollars but telling everyone it's cents.
Broke college students play $1/$3 and need $6850 bank?
I play $1/$3 at the casino, the highest stakes I've played at a home game were $1/$2. My bank theoritcally with switching my $25 -> 25c and $50 -> 50c would be 950 as the $100s have never been used or in play. The only reason I wrote my stakes get that high is because I'd like to eventually some day and wouldn't want to get a set now, be stuck at the lower stakes and have to get another set or add on later...
with chips budget below 2 buyins :)
I try to budget my $$ our because poker isn't a huge factor in my life, I use it as entertainment, kind of like a game you can level up in. I created a whole separate bankroll and have been surviving off of it's winnings for almost a year now being able to play around 20 hours a month. No $$ moves in and out of that bankroll, and if I were to ever lose it, I'd take a break long enough to recoup and restart another bankroll. That's just how it works in my head to 1. Not effect any personal expenses or go down a gambling rabbit hole, and 2. actively see improvement through results and minimization of downswings.

I would of course love to spend more $$ on chips and have the best THC set or CPC set. However, my home games are becoming more irregular and getting a new chipset isn't a priority but a want because I've been lurking for so long and have grown that interest. $500 is on the high side for me PERSONALLY, I don't have grown up money like a lot of people on this forum... but I do hope to invest in some as I get older.

Hope that explains the low budget but ability to play those stakes. And also why my bank seems so high in my cash set...

Cratty,

Thank you for the suggestions!

I was able to get my friend to splurge on a Barrington table as I was the one that bought the chips. We haven't dabbled in playing mats as the felt has been well kept and the table is pretty shallow as is.

With playing cards, I've actually dabbled a lot more there since they're more budget friendly than chips haha, in my collection I have Copags, Las Vegas playing cards from a vendor on PCF, Lotfancy and faded spades.

Thank you for the advice though!
