Hello.

I am new here.

I have a set of the Desert Palms Chips (https://www.apachepokerchips.com/product/desert-palms-poker-chips/).

Now their condition is no more good enough for our private cash game. (Splittered edges from the chip shuffeling)

I am looking for the best non-Poulsen clay chips.

I read a lot on forums and often the threads were old etc. Now i just want to know what possibilities I have.

Are the Pharaos or the Milanos better than the Desert Palms? I need the 25c or al least the 50c chips for the homegame.

EDIT: budget: 0.50$ / chip

Thank you for the answers.

Greez

First of all welcome to the forum!

I dont have much experience with china clays other than some sample sets, but in addition to the ones you have mentioned in your poll you should check out the majestics and the new dunes. Both of these are also sold by apache, and as far as i know seem like very solid options.

There's also some threads on here discussing the differences between pharaohs and milanos, which are both considered some of the better china clay options.

A lot comes down to personal prefrence, so you should get a sample set of each of the sets you are considering to see how you like them in your hands. Accurate colors, feel and sound is hard to get just looking at pictures.

Ok thank you for the answer. I thing that quality is not very good evaluable with a sample set. Everybody spoke about thechiproom.com.. Does this site exist anymore.. It seems that it is down.. Only for the moment?

Don't anybody know a little the different qualities? I think that it is impossible to know with the sample chips how long the chips will rest in good condition.

My Desert Palms started splittering the edges after 2 years.

Are all non-Paulson chips from China?

I have a set of Dunes commemoratives, in mint condition, which I may sell. These are the original versions of the ones being sold now by Apache. Will send a PM.

I'm about 99% sure all these China clays come from the same factory so it's really up to personal preference Re: the design and mold. At 50c a chip budget, you have access too all the popular china clays mentioned here.

I think the Milanos offer the best value / $. You can build a huge set for ~33c a chip. I like the Majestics for a cash set (that purple $500 is meh). I like the Pharoahs but the large label covers up too much "clay". The CPS chips are also nice, but the cross hatching may be severe for some (plus the $100 and $500 chips are really close in color resulting in dirty stacks).

I really love my Milanos. The only thing I may have done differently is mix sets for tourney vs cash to offer more variety and more chip PrOn to enjoy. Like maybe a Majestic cash set and a Milano tourney set, or something like that.

There are also some new Dunes china clays set to ship before Christmas.

So many options man! Down the rabbit hole you go.

With these parameters, I'd look at either the Dunes or the Majestics, both offered by Apache Poker Chips. Normally I'd also recommend the Venerati ceramic line as a viable budget option, however you specifically stated clay so those are out.

Good luck to you on your search!

The Desert Heat line is very similar to a few other lines (same chip just different label). They are slugged chips and are not china clays. They are great for budget chips, I have samples of all these lines and think they are well worth the cheap money for them if that is what you want to spend. But if you have around $.50/chip budget, I would jump on the latest Dunes offering from Apache as Mummel has a picture of above.

thanks a lot guys!

How can we explain the differences of prices on Apache Poker if you thing that they all have similar quality? Why are the Pharaos and the Milanos 2 times as expensive as the "old" Dunes for example?

The Dunes with the shaped labels are plastic, not china clay, so they are cheaper. The china clay Dunes have round labels, and are more expensive.

I know you mentioned non-Paulson, but keep a lookout on eBay for deals like below for Paulsons. Many will be dirty and worn, but they are still Paulsons. Even if you can't find enough of a specific casino, make a mixed set from multiple casinos. Once you clean and oil them, you'll certainly have something to be proud of.

You're paying for the design / personal preference.

Just to clarify, there are several different "Dunes" chips:

1. The original Dunes chips, from the Dunes casino.
2. Dunes plastic (shaped labels).
3. Dunes commemorative (china clay), which were first sold by thechiproom.com, now sold out.
4. Dunes commemorative (china clay), which are now being sold by Apache poker chips. These are a new batch of the previous china clays, with some chips having new edge spots.

Edit: Apache also sells the plastic chips, so they sell #2 and #4, above. The new china clays (#4) haven't shipped yet. See the posts in the Apache poker chip forum.

I mean, sort of the opposite for that specific example. The Dunes chips are licensed and so the China Clays were more expensive than comparable chips (Chip Room had to sell the Dunes a couple cents per chip more expensive than the Pharaohs). Apache doesn't carry the China Clay Dunes, though, only the Chip Room did. These are cheaper not because of design but because they are legitimately a much cheaper injection-molded chip.

Also for $6 more, check out the Pharaohs too.

You think that those chips should last longer in good condition than my Desert Palms Clay chips so?

Hey fellow Swiss chipper and welcome!

I have both the pharaoh and the majestic china clays and I am really happy with them (only thing I hate is that the edges are not crisp - they round them slightly). Anyway, since I do not need my pharaohs I would be happy to part with them - since they are already in Switzerland (Zurich) they could be yours soon...The pharaohs have been used exactly ONCE! so they still have the factory dust on it! If you are interested, let me know - denoms are 5ct/25ct/1$/5$/25$....

I made the big mistake of putting together a casino mint set of various casino chips and since cannot use the china clays anymore....:( I do take them to the army with me and that is good enough.;)

All china clay chips will exhibit the same basic wear characteristics. With few exceptions (PGI's reverse-L molds and CPS chips), they are all made using the same materials, although formulas have changed somewhat over the years.
