Hi everyone. I've been playing around with CPC chip designs for a while (like most everyone else.) I have started hosting home games on my boat and the whole boating/marine theme is something I want to see if I can use for a custom set. It'll be months or years, if ever, before I order a set. But dreaming is free.

Here's the design, followed by a description of each chip's role in the theme. I decided on Cali colors since my casino sets are all Vegas.

Marine Set v3.png

25c: It's a life ring (see attached image)
$1: Represents my three blade bronze propeller in the water (see attached image)
$5: My boat has green accents and canvas. Yellow and green are the colors of a yacht club where I'm a member. I'm least happy with this chip.
$25: Safety orange and safety yellow are two colors seen a lot in boating. Lifejackets, foulies (wet weather gear), buoys, etc. (Purple was the color for my high school too.)
$100: At night my boat runs with white lights shining forward and aft, and red and green on the port and starboard. This chip shows that viewed from above. Base color is white in keeping with Cali colors. (See the attached image on navigation lights.)

Inset: My boat is called Stillwater and registered out of Ketchikan, AK (where I bought her.) The line drawing is of the boat.

Definitely lots of overthinking going on here. But it's fun to play around with designs. Thanks for checking out my design - feedback welcome. Probably.

Personally I like what you have come up with. All your chip colors and edge spots work for me... I don't hate any of them. The Quarter Pie to me originally looked out of place to me but makes sense why you chose it after reading. Switch the deferred puke green background to a neutral choice so your chips/colors show up better. It's an option on the CPC design tool. The only thing I might be concerned about is the detail on your drawing of your boat and how it will show up. Hopefully someone can speak to that better than I can. Edit to add: this set screams Scroll mold to me personally.

Wow - nice boat chips!
I like the canary 5s with the green spots!
Personally i would tell the people the prop‘s got a sky blue color ; )
Well done!

Thanks for the great comments. I agree that the hundo looks a bit out of place in terms of "spot progression." It probably won't hit the felt much. Maybe I can reuse that design for some other non-cash chip like buy in, nit button or something. I changed the background to gray and I no longer feel seasick looking at the images! I share your concerns about the line drawing. From the samples I have I see that CPC can reproduce that level of detail, but it may be too busy. I made a solid version of the boat to see how that looks. And finally, I see what you mean about the scroll mold (waves) even though I'm not a big fan and love the elephant and crown. Either way, here's a revised version. Thanks again for your thoughtful feedback.

I once mocked up a marine theme as well, and for me the Small Crown Mold worked super well. Also make sure to check out some chips that use a DG Saturn spot as the color is different in real life compared to the design tool. Just a heads-up, it doesn't work with every chip. :)

and +1 on the solid ship & alternative 100

Thanks - I've seen a few samples and noticed that the colors in real life are sometimes quite different from what the tool shows - dayglo colors in particular. I will make sure I get my hands on a color sample set and check all the colors, adjusting as needed, before ordering.

Really like the theme and execution especially with the life ring, prop (brilliant) and navigation lights. Been thinking hard to see if I can offer any advice.

How long were you in Ketch? Did you live there or visit? I lived on Creek St for 2 amazing years.

Be careful with DG Saturn. It looks very different in the chip designer than it does in real life. It's more of pale yellow-green color in reality.

I'd recommend investing in a color sample set before finalizing colors. It's a bit of an expense, but pays for itself in the end knowing you got the colors "right".

I'm liking the theme and the early designs here. They are very good starting steps and are well on the way to a nice set of customs with a personal link that's not overwrought.

I love it! Well done. The 25c and $1 are perfect to me.

  • I like the first boat line drawing over the second. But looks good either way.
  • Try the $100 in a black base. You know, like a dark night with the colored lights shining port and stern and (maybe) the white lights shining fore and aft.
  • With the label, seems like there is the opportunity to do a split color, below the water line (e.g. a grey, black, blue, or other color). Something like the below very rough mock up.

Rotate the spots on the navigation lights $100 so they are properly oriented with the direction the boat on inlay is traveling?

I was only there for a succession of weekends to check out and buy the boat. This was in early 2015. I was there for about a week in April 2015 getting the boat ready to leave for San Francisco. When were you there?

Thanks! I have CPC chip that has dayglo yellow on it and that may be a better option. I'll definitely get a color sample set before committing.

Thanks for the support! Here's the hundo in black (I was planning to keep a white base to stay with the Cali color scheme):

I would have to spend more time to try to make the inlay more moody. My artistic skills are limited :)

Interesting suggestion but unfortunately it wouldn't work. With the boat direction shown on the inlay you would only see the starboard (green) running light since the port (red) would be hidden by the vessel and shining away from you. Technically you would only see the steaming (forward) light since it has a 225 degree angle of illumination whereas the aft running light has only 135 degree angle and wouldn't be seen from the side. It's all designed to help you figure out which way the vessel is moving at night.

In my design you are looking from above (as if on a chart) and the boat is traveling north (up) and seeing where the lights would be shining. This is partly why the quarter pie works a bit better - since it shows the arc of light projected (even in the angles aren't correct.)

Did I cross the TMI threshold?

I get that you were going with overhead orientation but your inlay boat is not an overhead shot so nothing lines up that way either, thus the suggestion

Ok - I had no intention of trying to line up with the inlay. So what orientation of spots are you suggesting? I don't see one that would work.

Just saying you could rotate existing spots to whatever location you want around circumference of the chip.

Last century. I miss it- it’s a great town
