"Murdered" Chip Meaning (2 Viewers)

Having read all the posts to this point, I have a potentially stupid question. If milling is murder, is inlay removal murder as well? Where's the line drawn? Removing an inlay seems more GBH than homicide to me.

both are 'murder'

but its ok. So long as your are not destroying some historical, rare, hard to find, or something I (matB) need.

Murders a strong word. But it is what it is.

To all the noobies to the forum, just know that the best candidates for murder are old TRKs and vintage Vegas chips :ninja:, but be sure to leave the Starburst alone.

Milling and inlay removal are both murder. Inlay removal can be done well with less equipment and practice.

I agree. The look and feel of an overlabel is not close to a full label replacement by a long shot.
I think it’s also worth mentioning that the feel of textured replacement labels wouldn’t fool anybody who knows what textured Paulson inlays feel like.
I agree that textured labels feel better than non-laminated overlabels, for sure. But they’re just not the real thing.

They do look pretty good though

Yea, I agree but....
Textured labels from Gear feel pretty close to the real thing, just like they look pretty close to the real thing. If you examine them under a loop you are going to see that the Gear labels are not going to fill the recess left by murdering 100%. Sometimes it will be better than others, but it is almost never 100% perfect. In the same way, the feeling of the Gear labels is not 100% the same as a textured Paulson inlay. It is my opinion that while a Paulson textured inlay is better than a Gear textured label it is only a little better & both are significantly better than a Paulson glossy or smooth laminate. Can't for the life of me understand why most of the current RHC's that are getting made are done with a glossy or smooth laminate and it just does not feel good at all.

I never thought I would be a fan, but I am a convert. I used to "poo poo" labels and right now I love them for many reasons. You might not fool a true chipper, but lets face it, you are not murdering and re-labeling to fool a true chipper. In my case, I all I want is my friends in my home game to say, hey cool chips! That is about it & none of them are going to be pulling out a loop or pulling out a Paulson textured inlay chip to compare anyway.

If any of them actually care, I will pull out some of my actual collectible chips that are never going into play anyway.

I agree with that. I prefer the glossy ones because the others just feel like cheap paper, but neither feel very good. Current THCs have the same lame feeling inlays and I’ve had to sell the ones I’ve had - I just couldn’t stand handling them.
Which leads me to this point:
I’m obsessed with Paulson textured inlays. Like, we all have our dealbreakers, and for me, it’s the textured inlays. So maybe I’m too critical of the textured replacement labels. But it’s what matters to me.
I love leaded Paulsons, I love shaped inlays, I love the THC mold. But I’d take real Paulson textured inlays over all those features.

So Paris $1s, as beautiful as they are, would be a no-go for you?

Right, that’s what I’m saying. I had those awesome Jerry’s Nugget $1s in a set. Couldn’t stand them. I’m currently using these boring-ass Rio $1’s in that set instead. I’m not saying it’s rational, just admitting to my problems.

I know you weren't asking me, but I would take the beautiful Paris $1's & murder them in a heartbeat. Put some great custom label on there with Gears textured labels to match the rest of my set and I would be a happy camper with a beautiful $1 in my Custom THC set

Nothing wrong with murdering live chips.

To me, having that inlay so badly off center is 1000x worse than having Gears textured labels vs a Paulson textured label
See, we’re all different. I couldn’t care less. Actually I find it charming.

100% agreed.

Shame that there's no way to get custom-made Paulson textured inlays any more...

BTW, I believe the textured or lack thereof on an inlay is due to the mold and not the inlay itself. The texture of the mold gets imparted to the inlay while the chip slug is in the press.

Thinking this was "crazy talk", I just looked under 50X magnification and you seem to be correct! I'm learning every day.

I think the move away from textured inlays is done for the same reason that casinos are going with larger inlays...it makes better looking and larger art. The casinos are much more concerned how their logo looks than how the chip feels.

Everything is murderrrrrrr

I’ve read that modern security features are not compatible with textured inlays
Shrug

I'm a big fan of the matte laminated inlay as well.
