Here are the sample sets I purchased. I went from really cheap to the top of my budget (Royals).

After a whole lot of deliberation, the Majestics won me over. The Milanos were great, but I found the colors to be drab. The Royals were naturally a close second, but I found the 43mm chips a little harder to shuffle.

I was very impressed by the Monoco Casino chips from Discount Poker Chips. Unlike the other budget options, the sides were perfectly smooth and there was no residue of any kind. The 14 gram weight was a deal breaker, but this would have been my choice if my budget were lower. I may actually pick up a dedicated tournament set at some point.

I also chose the majestics as my set! So I say what a great choice!

There are some good threads here on recommended set sizes (how many of each denomination) depending on the size of the games you are hosting. It’s a great starting point if you don’t have an idea already.

I have an idea in mind since I have a current cheap set I am replacing, but I am noticing my counts are WAY higher than the threads recommend. This is in part because I like to have a lot of low denomination chips on the table. My theory is that the fewer chips players get, the more heavy the raises tend to be. This means big pots, but you also lose people very quickly.

I started 8 years ago with Majestics and enjoyed them. Later moved up to Paulson and CPC - but I think Majestics are great in their own right, good choice.
Great to hear! How did they hold up after 8 years? I am reading about the material degrading and "crumbling". Also, is oiling them just an initial thing I should do, or is this an ongoing maintenance that will need to be done periodically?

More chips = more fun, just a little bit more expensive which is why some people suggest getting more “workhorse” chips.

If it’s in your budget, go crazy and have fun!

None of this is in my budget as far as the wife is concerned, but what's the saying? ...Ask for forgiveness instead of permission!

You may want to stalk the classifieds too. There are a lot of cheaper medium-end sets running around right now. I think there's a majestics set currently up there.

I just tried searching, but couldn't find any Apache Majestics. If you come across it, the link would very much be appreciated.

Great choice. If I hadn't found this forum, I would still be happy with my Majestics... Those are great and inexpensive chips. But I got hooked on PCF, and now I am broke. This place is dangerous for addicts like myself.

If you ever decide to go for custom chips like CPC or Paulsons, you will never look back. There is something about clay chips that makes them SPECIAL.

I think this might be in your wheelhouse. From one new guy to another. If you have time to burn, get more samples. I was dubious of this… and then I got more samples. Now I’m 3 sets deep.

On top of being in my price range, the Majestics just speak to me. I love the way they all look and their colors are gorgeous. What did you end up deciding on for your other sets?

I know what you mean bro. There is so much eye candy on this forum, it's ridiculous. If your Majestics are sitting around collecting dust, let me know. Hopefully we can work something out.

Sorry but I am keeping my Majestics for any games I do outside of my house. I would hate to ruin my CPCs when we play outdoor or when you play at someone else's place. Majestics are awesome for ALL type of games, easy to clean.

No worries brotha. I had to try

My first run of samples came from Apache, BRPro, and CPC. I went with a 600 set of new Apache Empire. I prefer the “china ceramic” of those chips to the CCs. BRP was a close second.

Then I came across an old ASM hot stamp set. … then I found a CPC set …

Now I’ve got more CPC, Paulson, and other casino samples incoming. If I was a betting man, a 4th set is incoming soon.

You’ve entered the slippery slope. Have fun with it!
