I've never heard that terminology used before.
Around here we typically identify edge spot patterns using a code with letters and numbers. The $5 chips in the original post are 3d14 and the $25 chips in the original post are 4d14. Here's what that code means:
4d14 - the 4 means there are four positions around the chip with spots.

d14 - the d means that each position has a
double spot
4d
14 - the 14 means that each spot is 1/4 inch wide (38 would mean 3/8 inch wide, 12 would mean 1/2 inch wide, etc)
So a
4d14 chip has four double-quarter-inch spots.
There are lots of different patterns, and each one has a different code. Some a pretty straight-forward, others are a little weird to figure out.
