Hello! I am purchasing a set for My Fiance's 21st.

His friend has Monte Carlos that he really likes, but he enjoys the look of Veneratis the best. I have looked ALL OVER for these. It seems like most sets are fake. Can i get any good recs for a similar look? I want to get him a nice set, the kind you pull out and everyone loves, then you become the host of poker night because of your chips. Any help is great. Just a girlfriend over here with no knowledge whatsoever!

Glad to see someone coming here to get a gift for someone they love. What’s your budget? How quickly do you need this gift? Do you think he’ll host more tournaments or cash games?

mostly just cash games. if I have the potential to purchase a tournament size set I will. Hoping to have in one month, unless it is better to just tell him they are coming and wait longer. I'd say about 500

Faros will impress the hell out of them.

BRProPoker and Apache Poker Store

Poker Set Selection Tool for quantities

For under $500 you can afford a ceramic set from BRProPoker which IMO are better than the Venerattis. Although you can probably afford a cash set and tournament set with what’s available on Apache. Plenty of great stock options here as well that will put his friends Monte Carlo’s to shame, including their Monte Carlo’s.

For a cash game, I’d recommend a set of 600. 100/200/200/80/20 ($.25/$1/$5/$25/$100). You got a couple options that blow the Monte Carlos in the water.

First are “Tinas” https://www.pokerchipforum.com/threads/chips-new-sun-mold-web-mold-greek-mold-april-2025.129138/ . There’s plenty of designs to choose from, and they come in around $0.5/chip. You can choose any from the current showcase or request designs that were previously made. Putting in an order through that link will take 2-3 months before getting the chips. Or you can search Tina on the classified section to see if anyone is selling a set now.

Another good option are “china clays” from Apache poker chips. The majestics and royals are great options at ~$0.5/chip.

Sidepot does sell veneratis but I saw a post on here that they are trying to fix their print issues. Probably best to avoid that for now.

If you like the simple, non-casino chip. Maybe consider the Laurel crown from mrcpoker. I got a sample of these but didn’t love all the colors.

I would also look at Tinas. If time is an issue, then you could probably post a wanted ad or find some for sale in the marketplace on PCF

This is a long time ago, but I ordered a 1000 piece set of these and returned them because of the printing alignment. About a third were off center - by enough to notice immediately - and I couldn’t live with it.

Plus, this is weird I know, they always felt “furry” to me. I’m sure it was because of the rich colors, but in my mind they always felt like velvet fabric or something.

Agreed. They did have printing alignment issues and did feel a little weird. The tops are a little bit more abrasive than a typical ceramic chip.

Just thinking of other chips that are simple, non-casino chips:
8-bit from BRPro - these were almost too simple for me but good quality

Teddy KJB (requires your fiancé to have seen Rounders. If he hasn’t, highly recommend it) - Tina version can possibly be found on the PFC marketplace or if you want to go over budget, you could get a set from CPC

Dia de los muertos or tiki kings from BRPro - more of a bolder chip vs the veneratis but good quality and good reviews

I was just there today to pick up a birdcage and seeing those chips on display made me recoil in horror. For as rough as they feel, I can't believe how slippery they are and how many spinners there are. I played with them in a tourney years ago and I had to be very careful to not bump the table and topple stacks. Seriously one of the worst ceramics I've ever played with.
