Pretty dang amazing find. Congrats and for the love of all things holy, please don't murder those. I already can't believe you're breaking up the set.

I'm new here, but don't get the responses about breaking up the set. He's got a large, gorgeous, playable set that he's going to use; if a few thousands dollars does him and his kids more good, why the pearl clutching about racks going to other collectors/users? Vast majority of us won't use two racks of $100s for a home game, he's got a bank of $14,000+. Is it more about eventually selling the whole thing together?
I might be missing the collector's mindset I guess, but this isn't his Great-Grandaddy's set, its a beautiful vintage clay poker set that's incredible but with very little sentimental value. He'll fondly think about it whenever he felts the chips, but that doesn't mean it's lesser because a couple hundred of them were dispersed in the community. I would've probably done the same thing.
Where were you when I had a PCA set. Damnit. Can’t speak for others, but my reaction was not “pearl-clutching,” but meant as friendly advice based on the following:
That’s just my take. It’s how I would approach it. I don’t see either my reaction that of others as meant to lecture or condemn, but to help. The OP can obviously do what he wants.
- As I understand it, the OP just got these chips. With any big decision, I think it is always a wise idea to wait a bit to let the initial shock/rush settle before acting. It’s a truly epic, almost overwhelming find. Why not wait a day, a week, a month?
- Even if after that, his decision remained to sell off some pieces, it still would be worth taking that time to fully consider the breakdown of what gets kept and what gets sold. For the same reason as above. (Just personally, I like to have as many $5s as possible.)
- As noted, if the OP ever decided he needed more chips of this design, it would be essentially impossible to do so, unless the buyers were really, really understanding people.
- If it’s just about money, long-term the set could become exponentially more valuable at its larger size. Whatever cash reaped now from a few barrels or racks would likely be dwarfed by what someone might pay in 1, 2, 10 years.
Very fair, I appreciate the explanation. I saw the comments as more of, its sacrilegious to separate racks from the whole set instead of practicality, definitely can see the point better now. That was the pearl-clutching comment, as in it was somehow "wrong" to break up the set, against some code. Can’t speak for others, but my reaction was not “pearl-clutching,” but meant as friendly advice based on the following:

By volume or mass?over under on the amount of cotton in these bad boys?
volumetric massBy volume or mass?
Is that oz as in Oz Minerals, the Australian mining company? I understand chips are basically 94% lead31%.
Exactly.
*assuming 10 oz cotton.
Sweet! Nice find!Best find of my life!! Once I finish this set with Fracs, I don’t anticipate buying any others…. I have my solids set that I’ll give to my son at the appropriate time (he’s already the dealer at my game and hosted his own poker night for his 16th birthday!) and I don’t see needing another set unless a tourney set just blows me away!View attachment 1283395
Thank you. The only thing I might buy going forward is a tourney set. I plan to give my son the solids set as he’s already the dealer of my regular game and is hosting numerous games with friends these days as well…Fantanstic find! Congrats! Finding a set like this might lead one to chipping retirement... unless you can keep finding more lol.
Because everything sold off is at high risk for murder. People spend years finding racks to complete small sets, why would they celebrate one being broken up.. unless they need them for a mixed setI'm new here, but don't get the responses about breaking up the set. I just don't see him (or most people) needing more than $14,000 on the table; I know games grow but everyone's different and there are some ceilings in most friend groups, I don't think the majority of us will ever need more. I feel silly having a barrel of $100s. I was for sure projecting on OP, thinking about what I'd do if I found some huge beautiful set like this, and found myself agreeing more with his mentality, but I can understand more experienced chippers rolling their eyes at me saying my game won't grow lol.
Does anyone know the history for these? I assume these are from a SD casino, but I can't find them on the chip guide.
Buy them all a hair cut.Thank you. The only thing I might buy going forward is a tourney set.
