Hey folks,

I’m new to the chip world and wanted to say hello. I’m a software developer in NY, and doing a bunch of research to figure out which entry level chips to start with and the tournament structure.

Currently I’m leaning towards Showdown chips over Majestics because I like the fact that they don’t have denominations, and I kind of enjoy the heftier feel (not much if any experience with high end poker chips though)

Matsui (these are HAWT right now), RHC Paulson that are not high demand mint (plenty of used ones out there for very reasonable prices, are great if you want real casino chips), Paulson roulette chips (come in a ton of colors and can make a great starter set), ABC ceramic (pick an existing design or make your own), Apache sells Monaco and Poker Knights (cheap and work very well), GPI PCF chips (lots of those sold on here), CPC custom sets (like Key West) are not crazy priced and are great "clay" chips that are high quality, even Unicorn plastics from GOCC are great entry level (I actually like these)

Key is to get your hands on these chips and see what you like. They all feel completely different.

Thanks for the warm welcome guys!

I got samples of Monaco’s, Majestics, Dunes, Monte Carlo and Showdowns. I thought the Monaco’s were dull in color, the Dunes were OK but at .40/chip on Apache Chips, relatively more expensive. The Monte Carlos were nice but didn’t love the gold. The Majestics were bright and light but not sure if their denominations were good for what I wanted. The Showdowns are the cheapest, but are hefty (not sure if that’s a good thing here) and I like the colors and feel. Also the lack of currency symbols seemed like a plus.

In terms of feel probably the Majestics were the best, but I didn’t mind the heavier Showdowns either.

Welcome, as said above get samples but you could save yourself a ton of money and go straight for Paulsons

Welcome. I have a ton of samples from when I started down this path. Let me know which you are looking at and maybe we can work out a loan.

Hello and welcome from another Software Developer. There is no one right chip or one that is better than another - except in the eye of the beholder. Find ones that you like and ignore what anyone says, chips are a personal preference thing.

Hello, welcome!!!! Definitely agree with all who have stated getting samples! Its nice to be able to feel out your options and get a good look at them in person before you commit to an entire set! Theres many options here in this forum and lots of wonderful advice! Best of luck in your search
