i think the solution is to just let cash play for $100s only, just like a casino if youre playing 1/2 - 5/10, breakdown should consist of 1s 5s and 25s mostly

edit: only because home games dont have unlimited chips and casinos do

You need the bigger bank for $5/$10 games with $1000 buy-ins. Is the sin of making change really that much worse that the sin of having cash play?

Of course not. That's why I said unless you need the bigger bank. From that point of view, it's not ideal to try and use the same 600 chip set for both 1/2 and 5/10.

But if those are the parameters, 600 chips to serve both 1/2 and 5/10, then obviously there is no choice but to have a limited number of $5 chips.

It was a bit tedious, but you really only have to do it once with the drop down thingy and then cut and paste it (and then change the actual numbers in the breakdown).

No. OP wanted a set to play 1/2 with some 5/10 games. Not very many play 5/10. I wanted to base my first set on 1/3. Not that I cannot afford it but read my post from earlier today. I have several hobbies and do not want to spend over $1000 on a starter set. Trying to first see if I will add chips to my collections.

look, you can spend your time reading posts and making relevant and helpful suggestions. leave the grunching and and overly long unnecessary breakdown posts to me.

but yeah you're right - i didn't see his limit.

with the limit of 1000 chips i would say:

100 (1)
400 (5)
400 (25)
80 (100)
10 (500)
10 (1000)

and then let cash play for any overage. ideally i would just get a full rack of hundos and a stack (20) each of $500s and $1ks to be kept separately for those nights when they're needed.

EDIT: however, OP, if you're playing $5/10 NL, put on your big boy pants and pay for the right breakdown fer chrissakes, particularly when it's available for such a reasonable price in the form of those par-a-dices.

i think my breakdown quoted by BG above is probably about where you should shoot to be at this point. it can handle a single table of either game and if you care to, you can always add a couple racks in there later on if you want.

I play poker almost everyday. 5/10 is a very big game for a home game . Even online the max buy in was a dime only ( thank heavens) you really need 50bb or more to play at that level anyway........ at home games I'm sure it can go much bigger. I have found that 5/5 and 2/5 games are grinder intensive and there is a lot of gamble at that level. In the few 5/10 NLH games I have played the play is more subdued and less hands 3 way seen in most sessions but the pot size heads up get huge fast as it really comes down to out playing versus bankroll perceptions. There is a really good video of Hellmuth and others playing 2/5 getting beat on as the game is tough in general they lost 2500 in a hour.... and to think to them that's not a lot but translate to high stakes.... HUGE LOSS.... 20/40 limit and others are much different than NLH but I have found that 2/5 5/5 (sometimes with a rock, a forced straddle ) can be just if not more juicy with the right line up.

The 5/10 game usually ends up being Omaha H/L or Houston. One guy is bank and we always played with real money. Fun to see actual money being bet. My thoughts are using chips it will speed up the game especially with split pots. I guess I new what I was talking about but I realize I did not give all of the info for all of you to give me the correct advice.

It is a variant of Texas Hold'em. Each player is dealt four cards. The first round of betting is done. Prior to the flop each player must discard one card. They dealer asks "is everyone back?" meaning they have discarded a card. After which the flop is dealt. The rest of the game is like regular hold'em. If a player has four cards after the flop his hand is mucked. Some of the "old guys" will call this game but play it s a a no declaring hi-lo game. They will play "the wheel" as low and a player can sweep or "pickle" the pot.

Some of these guys have been playing for 40 plus years and are great to play with. Money can pass hands and have seen some $1000 plus pots.

These players have a few games that you probably only see in Texas home cash games. I prefer to play regular Hold'em but the occasional Houston Hold'em is a nice change.
