hey PCF'ers, recently found the site and have dug through much of it but i am slightly confused in a few areas.
I am looking to buy chips for my home game .50/1 and 1/2
Seems it has come down to clays vs ceramics
my criteria is a follows
.25 denominations
would rather not pay $1 per chip
no sticker inlay, prefer a permanent solution

with those 3 being needed, am i stuck with ceramics, for example the Valentino's?
I really like the looks of the valentino's
some feedback i have read is the slipperiness of the ceramics can be undesirable.

or is there a clay option that is stickerless?

any help here would be greatly appreciated, or if someone is selling such a set, i would love to take a look at it.

Welcome.

You'll soon learn that frac's (<$1) are the hardest chip to come by. It is highly unlikely to find them (in clay) for less than $1/each.

Not at less than $1/chip, and certainly not if you're looking for quarters/fractionals, no.

If the ceramics are heavily used then yes, they can be slippery. Modern, new ceramic blanks have texture on them, though, which prevent a lot of slippage that might otherwise occur with plastic chips (even high end ones like Matsui's). I don't suspect you'll have too much of an issue with slipping when it comes to ceramics.

As do I - they're a pretty good budget option and look classy. You might also look into the Venerati's. While I personally don't favor the design at all, you can't go wrong with the price.

The vignoble, dropa disks, and Nevada Jacks are all possibilities as well. Check them out here: http://www.oldwestpokersupplies.com/shop/stock-ceramic-poker-chips

Whatever you do, get samples before making the full purchase.

Welcome to the site, best of luck to you on your search, and be sure to post pictures here when you get your set!

thanks for the replys, I guess my suspicions were correct, if i dont want stickers, ceramics are the way to go.

Definitely order some samples. I like the Valentinos too and almost ordered a set, but the muted colors gave me pause and they will cost you close to .90 cents if you want them edge aligned.

For the cost of the China Clays, you might reconsider and save your money for Paulsons, Key Wests, or a custom CPC set.

I ordered the CC Dunes over the Valentinos....

Samples, samples, samples...

the cc dunes have a sticker inlay correct?

Yup. All china clays have a sticker label.

edit: sorry I was slow on the response as I was checking out @Psypher1000 's OWPS link and never saw the other responses. Thanks for posting that link, there are some cool offerings in there that I was not aware of.

Lots of cools stuff there for sure. I've always been "ceramic curious". so to speak, but I've never taken the plunge. I've got about 5 samples of various sets and I really like some of them. I just don't know if they will see the felt against my CPC and Paulson sets. The closest I've been so far was for the recent Sunfly GB, but I was holding my money back for a CPC order.

Yeah same here on all accounts. I took the plunge with the Boardwalk hybrids cause the price was so tantalizing but it will take a lot to pick ceramics over clays tbh. MrTree's Paymaster set though...wow.

Sorry for derail.

so the stickers really arent an issue with constant chip shuffling etc? maybe i just have bad criteria here and should be looking at clays only.

As long as they apply the stickers correctly (or you check them prior to using), the stickers should fit inside the recessed area and don't interfere with shuffling or stacking.

+1 for the Tiki Kings if you go ceramic.

Otherwise there are nice options for the China clays. Milanos, Majestics, Pharaohs or CPS.

Very different materials. Some are ABS plastics, others are "china clays" (plastic composites that feel like clay).

I recommend taking a look at the 4 China clays I suggested above.

I've used "sticker" chips for years and have had no issues with labels peeling or coming off involuntarily. Some of my players even prefer the sticker chips to inlays, and none prefer the ceramics.

Sticker chips are more than a paper sticker. They are vinyl disks that use an adhesive to bond them to the chip. The vinyl is often laminated, giving it extra stability and protection from splashed pots or banging against your keys while in your pocket.

Some of the world's top chip manufacturers use stickers (Bud Jones, Matsui) for use in casinos. If there was even the slightest chance of the label peeling off, they would be worthless.

Just because creative chippers have used xacto knives to pull the labels off chips, you should not mistake intentional removal of a label with accidental.

so is it safe to assume all of the chip here
https://www.apachepokerchips.com/product-category/poker-chips/
are all the same with different color or stamping patterns?
same quality, same material just slightly different mold imprints with different sticker?
No not all of the chips are of the same quality. Some are ABS plastic (bluff canyon, poker knights etc), some china clay (Majestic, Milano, Pharaohs and the new Dunes).

The 15¢ range chips are plastic, and very slippery. Check out the chip cohesion video here.

The Majestics and CPS (Champ Poker Series) are similat, but have a very different feel due to texture on the chip, though the materials are virtually identical.

39¢ chips are ceramics.

The Milanos are also China Clay, labeled chips. I have a set that I use solely for games I host in an insecure* location (charity poker events, bar-room games, or at the home of a friend-of-a-friend. *Insecure meaning that if a chip fell on the floor and got lost, my chances to ever recover it are practically zero.

I concur with those that say get samples. Not just 1 or 2, but a stack. I was extremely pleased that I did, because there are a lot of nice looking chips out there that are absolute junk (as evidenced in the video) because slippery chips "explode" if picked up in a large stack with uneven pressure (like removing them from a tray or case), and make a mess when trying to stack them or the stack or table is bumped.

oh damn, those majstics are very nice.
yes, Majestics are amazing, I have a set and absolutely love it.

i was going to ask for an actual picture to show the contrast between the .25 and the 5's,

Yeah, I did oil them, the colours on the majestics pop the best our of the china clays in my opinion.

Milly's chips are fantastic. The only reason I didnt get them was because of cost vs the Milanos and the white $1 chip is an eyesore, but Milly did a label switch and they look great! Great PrOn.

Hahaha, I'll be honest, I have bought 3 sets after buying this one. And unfortunately these will be relegated as a travel set.

May sell them in the future, but too attached to them right now! Lol
