So, I've been out of the loop for a while (a long while). I've been searching these forums and other sites for hours now. My head hurts, my heart hurts and my eye hurts (only have the one). I don't have the money to buy clay chips, nor the want to have such expensive chips to take care of (I need 2000 chips to run my tourney). Years and years and years ago, I bought Nexgen River Poker Tour chips. A "composite chip" that has served us VERY well. Everyone likes the chips...look, feel, and I liked the price.

We are now adding another table and I need more chips. These particular chips are unavailable. I can't find them anywhere, even used. I also, can't seem to really find a supply of any other "Nexgen" poker chip. Everything seems to be "out of stock."

So my questions are:

1. Did Nexgen go out of business?

2. What comparable composite chip exists that compares to the look, feel and price of the Nexgen chips?

3. Where can I find these comparable chips?

Thanks in advance for your help!

The original Nexgen 12.5g slugged injection-molded chips (three different lines) were made in China and are no longer produced. They were replaced by the NexGen Pro chip line, a 9g no-slug injection-molded chip, which is also no longer produced. Not a company, just a chip product massed produced by a factory in China.

There are several wheat-ear mold chips that might seem close to the originals, in terms of price and weight, but nothing currently on the market really matches the look (or feel) of those chips. Most similar chips sold today are much cheaper -- a harder plastic with much lower quality control, and typically around 13.5g or heavier.

If you're wanting to add onto your existing NexGen set, buying used is your best bet. You won't be happy adding anything else new. And the RPT chips were probably the least quantity produced of the three lines (Las Vegas and Lucky Bees were the other two), so it won't be an easy hunt. Those two lines will have a similar feel, but some of the base colors and none of the spots will match.

I just played with a set of custom-labeled Las Vegas chips this past weekend. Even my wife didn't like 'em.

So, moving away from them then....

I'm currently browsing apachepokerchips.com.

I'm seeing "clay" chips starting at $0.13 per chip (Monte Carlo) through $0.16 per chip (Poker Knights). I don't see where these have slug inserts. Are these just lower end clay chips?

This would be my price range. Will these be/feel better than the Nexgens that I currently have?

Thanks again!

That price range is mostly ABS plastic chips. Some are slugged, some are not. Usually the slugged ones are the 11g+.

That said in that range I have played with desert heat, which I thought were pretty good, and I believe are basically the same as the Rock and roll, bluff canyon, etc, as listed on Apache.

Find the @Hobbyphilic YouTube channel, he reviews chips of all price levels and may give you an idea of what is current out there.

Also, review the tournament threads for breakdown ideas. People can run 3 table tournaments on 800-1000 chips with good structure and planning. (You may see @BGinGA pop up here and there :P)

Yeah, none of those are actually clay chips. They too are slugged injection-molded plastic chips. You generally won't find new 'real' clay chips for less than $1 per chip, except for the promotional chips produced by GPI and sold under their Gemaco brand.

There are four tiers of slugged plastic chips in that price range (roughly 12c to 16c), and most are available with different label designs:
  • wheat ear mold chips (Kings Casino, Crown Casino, Monte Carlo Millions, etc.)
  • various types of crown mold chips (Monte Carlo Poker Room, Casino Royale, etc.)
  • greek key/stitch mold chips, two different spot patterns (Desert Heat, Rock 'n' Roll, Bluff Canyon, The Mint, Gold Rush, etc.)
  • spade & sword mold chips (Poker Knights, Monaco Club, Showdown Club, etc.)
Generally speaking, you want to avoid any chips that have a common spot color (usually white) on all of the chips, or chips that have dice or card suit images in the mold (and most of those types weigh 11.5g). None of the chips listed above fall into those categories. Btw, 11.5g is NOT official casino weight -- it's a marketing gimmick/lie. Most modern casino chips weigh right around 9g-10g, whether made of clay or ceramic materials.

Personally, I'd rate that list above as being from low to high, regardless of the price being charged. All are in the 12g to 14g range, so about what your Nexgen chips weigh or a tad heavier. Bang-for-the-buck is pretty good with the spade/sword mold chips imo -- slightly softer feel and typically better quality control than the others, especially if you get an older set made before Claysmith took over the lines.

If looking for a decent budget chip that isn't slugged, I think the 2-stripe twist line of chips are a pretty good value -- a bit light at 8g, but very playable, no cheap metal slug clanking sound, and they are generally in the 15c-20c price range, but can be found for as little as 9c per chip in lots of 1,000 chips. It is also a discontinued line, but there are still a lot of these chips out there for sale. Some older sets have different labels than the more-common card-twist artwork (shown below).

Just let me know if you'd like any breakdown or structure advice -- you probably really need far fewer chips than you think.

...but the host's wife didn't kill him when he paid for those chips and labels.

Re: NexGen 12.5g slugged chips... Is a faux-TSP bath OK to clean these? I play in a 5/5 game 1-2 times per month and the host’s chips are filthy.

Thinking of suggesting I arrive early one week and clean them, but wanted to make sure this wouldn’t degrade them in some way. I assume not, given they are composites, and I’d of course test one first, but wondered if anyone had any experience there.

I’d try just a salad spinner with warm water and a 1:9 TSP ratio for starters.

(I’ve tried to convince him to upgrade to Paulsons—the way his crew plays, there are often pots which themselves would pay for a good cash set. But the host doesn't want to spring for them, and the guys don't want to chip in either. Grr. )

It won't hurt the chips any, but can't make any promises regarding the labels -- especially if they are home-printed or aftermarket items (often uncoated ink-jet printed paper).

Does anyone know where to get Nexgen Lucky bees 8200? I need 100 Greens and 100 Reds. Anybody have Extras?

I have spare multicolor series NEXGEN.. 3 colors, yellow, orange and purple.

I've seen the Claysmith stuff up close. Apache has them listed as Mint poker chips. They're slugged, but colors are very vibrant.
