No more free parking at MGM resorts (1 Viewer)

This is incredibly dumb. If the prices are right locals will all go elsewhere and tourists too if they read the fine print.

I guess I will no longer play poker at aria or bellagio. The wynn or venetian will get all my business now.

Sad thing is I had read someone speculating 2 months ago it was only a matter of time some bean counter said "hey, we have some premium parking, we should charge for it".

Add another death nail into the strip casinos. 6/5 BJ, comp drink tickets or pacing, terrible VP and slots. They wonder why their gaming revenues decrease, no one wants to play (lose), they'd rather shop and club for those same dollars, so gotta increase fees to make up for the shortage.

/sigh

Thanks for the heads-up k9dr. I still use valets almost exclusively, and tip heartily (it keeps my car "up front", usually kept in the porte-cochere). With self park becoming a fee, it will be mere seconds before valet fees begin. This will simply mean a smaller tip.

I'm not made out of money.

Soooo....does this include the non-vegas properties? I'd hate to have to pay $5 to get in to the states, $5 to get back into canada AND parking at the MGM to "steal" quarters.

Wait a second......... yup it would suck but I'll still do it :p

Wow, Vegas won't pay 3/2 for a blackjack? WTF? I guess there is no use for their snappers now. Am I missing something here?

Not all the tables are 6/5, just some. Still to set that precedent is insanely bad.

FWIW Atlantic City has had paid parking for years but basically anyone who plays any reasonable amount in casinos will have parking comped.

I remember when Friendly's restaurants would only give you half a cherry on your ice cream sundae. I'm sure there was some bean counter in a meeting telling the execs "if we cut the cherries in half we'll save MILLIONS!"

no paid parking at foxwoods....yet

Think paid parking is inevitable and once MGM does it every single other strip property will follow suit - some by choice and some by necessity.

With MGM's new 20,000 seat stadium about to open, this had to be inevitable. How many major venues in America have free parking? Add to the mix the premium for space on/around the strip and it simply couldn't be any other way.

The difference being parking garages at most major venues sit vacant most of the time. Whereas last time I was in Vegas, I had to drive to the 3rd floor of the MGM garage to get a spot on a Wednesday at 1pm. Couple that with the actual reason I am there, which is so I could place bets where I know I am getting the worst of it but do it anyway, leads me to the conclusion that I am pretty sure it simply could stay the same way. They just know people will pay it, because if any of their visitors gave a shit about money... Vegas would be the last place they would actually visit.

Looking forward to getting the $47 bill for parking for a 4 night stay. 4 x $10 a day and the hidden $7 parking lot fee, which will cover things like stair maintenance and access to the "view level" which is just the shitty top level that isn't covered.

I've always been a top level parker when using garages (top of the Mirage garage is one if the best easy access views in town). Any view is better than the view inside the garage and no floor number to remember. Not like you lose any time.

Agree with this. I park in the surface lot at Borgata due to its proximity to the poker room, but if I self park there or any other casino with my wife (i.e., not just zipping in and out of the poker room), I always go top level. No stress finding a spot and we're always closer to the elevator than we'd have been if we tried parking on one of the bottom levels.

Agreed. Most people look for the 1st spot, leaving the top floor virtually wide open. Those parking up there are far more capable of thinking in 3 dimensions, and therefore are less likely to leave you with a door ding.

Agreed. I used to park on the top level whenever I could. Nothing better than taking in those views, after a long winning session. Even better if it was around 5-6a, and you could see the sun coming up over Sunrise Mountain. Those are some of my favorite Vegas Memories.

Seeing articles like this and the craps odds changes really turns me off as someone who's never been to Vegas. It just seems completely antithetical to the famed "good old days" I've heard and read about.

Going in January. I haven't been there in several years... Parking won't hit me since I will probably uber, lyft, or shuttle to the hotel.

Sucks to hear about the 6:5 blackjack tables. I will have to keep a lookout for that. Any other things I should look out for?

Less savages up top to ding your car up as well...

BTW, resort fee going into effect on January 4 here in AC at Borgata. Comped rooms used to be $5 per night as some kind of fee, now going up to $15. Evidently it gets "free" wifi, but obv still bullshit.

Update:

As a once (sometimes twice) a year vegas visitor, this will create just one more obstacle in Vegas vacation planning. It's unlikely I'll achieve Pearl status again (I reached it once), so now it's all about what the fee will be, when do I need a rental car, can I get by using Uber/Lyft, and adding the fee to the "effective room rate".

MGM, where a 3 night free room costs $135 ($205 after appropriate tips).

If you're staying at an MGM property, do you have to pay to park there during your stay?

Room + resort fee + parking fee

Yes, as of June 1st if k9dr's source is accurate. It's been coming down the pipe for a while. The construction of a new stadium created the need for more parking. More parking needed costs to be offset.

MGM was also the first to introduce resort fees. I suspect we will see 100% of properties charge for parking in the next 5-10 years.
