I have players that prefer the one set that tops out in plaques more than any other set.

Side tables
Unless, like me, the bottom 1/3 of your spine is held together by rods and titanium cages. Twisting for a side table is physically impossible, and quite frankly is annoying for many older players.

Nice table/felt
Can't knock this. The better the table and felt, the better the cards glide and are to pick up.

Nice chairs
Even padded folding chairs are good if you take breaks, but if you are planning an 8 hour sit-fest, Gassers are the way to go.

Nice chips
Yes, yes, yes!

Especially if the top end denom is a plaque.

Nice cards
Plastic only, unless you want to replace the decks nightly.

Pizza delivery
The last time I ordered pizzas for my group, I got audible groans. Home cooked food is better, cheaper, and usually healthier.

Still not on board with TD. You need a timer with blind levels, and it is best if it is readable from every seat.

Always good, but musical tastes can be subjective.

Bourbon, wine, vodka, whiskey, then beer. Hell, a full bar is the best play, but at a minimum the host should provide ice and cold water. Since we are discussing beverages, I'll add real glasses too. A poker game isn't a picnic in some park. Leave the Solo cups in the cupboard.

Maybe not for the first game, but my players love bounty chips. I added in a bounty a couple games ago. When I didn’t use them the next game I had a rebellion on my hands lol.

We do $50 buy in with a $20 bounty.

Lots of other really good advice in this thread too.

+1 for this. My players like bounty chips. They also like All In chips, so we don’t have to shove our entire stack in. These are the only two accessory chips we use, so I wanted them to be pretty special.

If you're the sort to have lots of locks on cash, out-of-play chips, etc. - keyrings and keyring holders.

Putting keys on belt-loop keyring holders prevented a lot of silly looking fumbling with loose keys/keyrings.

am genuinely curious why this player group has so steadfastly rejected plaques. Very unusual.

I use T25K and T100K plaques for tournaments (conveniently, they appear via colouring-up around the final table of my MTTs usually), and they are highly desired.
I honestly have no idea what the allure is to having a rectangular piece of plastic which is supposed to represent a poker chip

Yes, this is definitely a tough one. I am a big Deadmau5 fan and put together a large playlist for the last poker night......the players weren't too pleased lol. So, I guess it's back to the old reliable 90s alternative rock list.

I would echo the statement of having a home-cooked meal if possible, and if you're running a tournament, having something to do for players that are eliminated early if you're running a tournament. A cash game is a popular option, or maybe other board games as well.

Something that I haven't seen, probably because it's so obvious but could be worth mentioning, is to either specify how players will be paying the buy in, or being prepared for people arriving with a mix of payment types, i.e. being able to make change for the people that only show up with larger bills, and having a plan for people who intended to buy in via Venmo.

At genuinely high levels they are cool as hell. I've had the chance to look over and hold an acquaintance's $25,000 Crown Casino Melbourne plaque, and with the higher level of design intent and monetary context there it was awesome.

The cheaper stuff for consumer home games, sure, personal preference.

Not saying any words and tossing in a single chip is also simple and straightforward.

Plus, MOAR chips.
Alternatively they can be used by dedicated dealers in same way poker rooms use them for betting clarity. I moved to that function after originally getting all-in markers for players to use themselves. Adds a nice bit of professionalism for those self-serious types like me trying to pretend they've got an authentic experience going :cool
