I wouldn't oil the sample set, because you're 99% likely going to be comparing it to an unoiled chip, and it will read off.

This is where having multiple sets would be handy.... one oiled, one not.

Well, since I would have an oiled set AND an uncoiled set, it would allow me to compare both and make a more educated decision...

One of my sample sets is also (I believe) of a much earlier vintage than the other two, with the Paul-Son logo on one side... I notice this set’s colors differ more from the others, maybe due to the change in lead content? Having that additional data point just adds to the headaches, really.

Perhaps I should amend my answer. If you only have ONE sample set, don't oil it.
