Something worth keeping in mind is that almost any Paulson set you buy, you could pretty much just be borrowing for free. If you don't like a set, it's easy to turn around and resell it for what you paid for it to someone else who might like them better. You're almost never out the money.

Being picky is fine, and actually quite normal around here! However, if you’re gonna be picky you may have to open the wallet a little more, it’s hard to find a perfect set anymore at $2/chip.

For what it’s worth, I am somewhat in the same position as you. I really just need a 500-600 cash set for a very regular game and don’t really want to spend $3k on some of those amazing sets out there that I really love. However I have been watching over the last couple months and will say that really interesting sets pop up and really interesting deals from time to time if you are patient. I am not patient so I went ahead and bought an inexpensive Aransas Queen RHC Paulson Set with the intention of keeping an eye on the market over the next year and either assembling or just seizing the rare opportunity on a full perfect set or a great deal.
If you really want an idea set you are either going to pay with money or time, and I decided to pay with time and just get something workable for the interim because as @RainmanTrail pointed out if you buy Paulson you should be able to sell at the same price you purchased.

FWIW These are similar Aransas Queen chips that I bought as the "interim". Even though this listing was sold there are some of these sets floating around for sale at about $1/chip.

Very well put.
When I first found this site, I came across a large set of Aztar Indiana chips for like $1/chip. Maybe a little less. And I jumped on it because it was a good deal even though it wasn’t exactly what I wanted. Played with it for a bit. Realized I actually like RHC more than most people. And then something else come up that I wanted (chips for a custom relabel set), I sold the aztars off for right around what I paid.

I’ve actually got more Aransas chips I’ll eventually offer for sale, but I’m waiting on labels. The $1s were rare and I’ve sold off all mine. But I was able to harvest a few racks of players casino $1s to relabel as aransas $1s and pair with fives and $25s to make nice cash sets. Once I get those labels, I’ll probably post more for sale. But here’s what the chips look like:

Are you specifically looking for THC (top hat cane) or RHC (reverse hat cane) or it doesn't matter? Generally, RHC will sell for less.

Oh that opens up a lot of possibilities. RHC chips are often half the price of somewhat comparable THC chips. Lots of options then!
