Paulsons vs Custom Tinas (3 Viewers)

well the worst of the worst is to mix THC and Tinas, LOL. Do not substitute!
Lucky Chances is close.

Come see @kmccormick100 RPC set that has been shuffled many times by us. I doubt you even notice any difference in sharpness.

Not shuffling Paulsons is more like not taking your Ferrari beyond 5 mph because you're afraid to get rock chips or damage the engine.
Pics?
I bet i can see a difference. They become tires for a reason. I play with some very anxious shufflers, lol

Agreed with most of above. It’s all relative in my mind.

My view is similar to other hobbies. How much do folk spend on golf gear, season passes for sports etc? I’ve spent a decent chunk on other hobbies, like fishing gear. Made zero real difference to actually catching the bloody elusive yellowtail, but ye know, I liked the cool looking carbon fiber rod that I use a few times a year. If you can afford it and like it, do it. Will I feel silly after getting skunked again… probably, but I like to have nice quality stuff to play with.

The best set I’ve owned was this relatively cheap Bicycle poker chip set in Vegas I got 15 years ago:

These were ‘fancy’ for everyone I played with back then and we had great game nights with them. I’ve only ever had 1 player in 20 years make a negative comment about my last set of chips (Nexgens), so my view is unless you play with PCFr’s, your players won’t care if they are Paulsons or Tinas or Walmart dice. If you think it’s too much, sell and get Tina’s or whatever.

I’m also pretty trigger happy in the classifieds sometimes, if it’s not right, just post and sell and move on (bought a couple of racks that didn’t work, didn’t realize that until I had them though).

GL

No close up shots but these are the definition of near mint imo. They’re not gonna be razor mint out of the box but if you don’t run a cardroom and have more than one set it will take years if not a decade to get to bike tires.

There is a Euro guy who used ES daily and they wore down to tires but that was exponentially more use than I assume you host.

In my readings on this forum, I fully understand that comparing Paulsons to Tinas is apples to oranges. However, I bought a few racks of paulsons and feel buyers remorse. We play a 0.25/0.50 game. It feels really silly to be building a set that costs me $1,500-$2,000 to put together and months of my time.

I'm a couple racks of $5s away from actually being able to play with this set, but am considering selling it off and just going with a custom Tina set.

I can't get over the fact that I feel foolish selling these chips that I bought over the past few months. Or maybe I feel foolish for buying them in the first place?

Anyway, thanks for listening and for potentially filling the shoes of therapist if only for a moment.
Welcome to chipping.. you'll get the hang of it after a few years ;)

My advice is buy the best that you can afford right out of the gate.

Going from mint Paulsons to Tina is just lol.

From my experience I think having both is the best of both worlds. Customs give you more possibilities for cool colors/designs without affecting the price, whereas Paulsons range widely depending on the colors/desirability. I like to use the Tina chips for casual games or travel, and break out the Paulsons for special occasions and home games.

i have a good friend who bought custom roman mold ASMs way back in the day, and is disappointed they have still not worn into bicycle tires after all these years. they never will, but he wants his chips to be used
Tell your friend I will trade him used Paulson THC bicycle tires from real casinos for his Roman molds. Make him a good deal.

IMO.. the only foolish thing is continuing to keep sinking money and time in something you don't love once you realize it. Recommend giving it a couple months break before you do anything to figure out what you really want first.. your Paulsons aren't going to lose value in the mean time.

Not being a weirdly obsessed chip person like many of us here is more normal than not.. Tinas are wonderful and better chips than likely the vast majority of chips used at home games. Sure they're inferior in many ways, but just because you can buy a Rolex doesn't mean you personally wouldn't be just as happy with a Seiko.

Thanks for the advice here. Maybe I'll hold onto the ones I have as I assemble the custom set. @Okku is designing them, excited for the journey.

I think you definitely will regret at some point down the road if you end up selling them.

Also, I see no issue owing both a Custom Tina Set and a Paulson Set. U can use them for different occasions.

Or, would you recommend a temporary substitute for IOC $5s that may be more readily available and would suffice in the meantime?
DJ $5 is a good sub for IOC $5 and they are pretty newish from TCR with large amount of them to be found in the secondary market.

DJ suffer from lacks of $1 to compliance enough DJ ready sets, thus ending in surplus of $5 and $25

Frankly, IOC set is one of the first set that caught my eye too but they are sold before my times and it's too expensive for my comfort and the DJ represent a lot of similarity with IOC set

I’m new here as well and have been second guessing my purchases from the jump but I say finish the IOC Paulson set! Going thru the same thing building a HS Clev set and higher denoms are crazy expensive. But they make me happy. I absolutely love the feel, sound, smell, vibrant colors, and overall quality. In my mind there’s nothing like Paulson/CPC etc. compressed clay. But my players could give two shits what chips we play with - they think Milanos are good. Oy. So there is a place for Tina’s and other ceramics. Anyways, off to buy more chips I prob don’t need.

Cheers

If you feel weird now, just wait until you start spending that on a single rack of Paulsons for a 0.25/0.50 game! :ninja:  :ROFLMAO:

In all serious, I agree with several posters above. Get some Tinas (for the love of God, not the Tina RHC knockoffs) and see how you feel about the Paulsons in a few months.

If you do keep the Paulsons, use them. People not allowing their players to shuffle Paulsons literally blows my mind. Reminds me of this guy….

I use to think these types of shows were TV bait when I was a teenager, then I started meeting these people at work. Mind… blown…

Defending the corners on a set of Paulson’s would be death by a thousand cuts IMO. lol

He would never trade his customs. He just wishes ASMs wore in a bit after 20 years  :ROFLMAO:

When I was trying to find my first set of chips, I passed on Paulsons because they were too expensive - $1 per chip.

If I ever get a time machine, my second stop will be to smack that me in the head.

Same. I just couldn't justify $1.00/chip when there were Faux Clays for $0.09/chip.

Dont apologize....

in some circumstances I would prefer Tina over Paulsons...especially if I need to put them into game...

they much cheaper and easy to clean, also ceramics have more design options

I've got a few clay sets and a set of Tinas for cash and the tinas see more use and get just as many compliments from my players as anything else. There is absolutely nothing wrong with grabbing a great usable set of ceramics for cheap and moving on. You don't -have- to let the virus incubate until you're paying $10/chip for something.

ETA: But it sure can be fun, if it's something you enjoy

"Must Wash Hands and No Chip Shuffling Allowed"

LOL
Right....? I mean, I got the hot dog roller going, onions, chili, condiments. Chips, dip, drinks. My HSI secondaries are maybe 2 years ago and look brand new. We only play monthly though, but I can't imagine the time when they show significant wear.
