legit question, what's the best way to get samples?
Ask folks here.

Hit up your local brick and mortar store and talk to the sales person. Let them know what you like and you'll have a ton of recommendations.

I would suggest NOT buying your first box of cigars until well into your second year of the hobby. Tastes change and evolve and there's nothing like realizing that box of cigars you bought aren't as good as you'd thought.

Also, sites like Cigar International or JR Cigars will have sampler packs. 5,10, 20 or more. It's a good place to start. You will find out what binder and filler tobacco you like and you can go from there and try more.

I'm a huge fan of Maduro wrappers. Fuente is my go to. Some guys love a Connecticut shade wrapper and Drew Estate or Perdomo might be their go to.

Get samples.
That's a bit more of a difficult task over here in the UK unfortunately.

Here's the price for a box of 10 when ordered from Switzerland, where prices are way, way cheaper:

Here's the price of an individual stick here in the UK:

Once you add shipping to the mix for a single stick, it just makes it extremely cost-prohibitive, sadly.

That’s thievery.

I picked up a sample pack and then a few samples of ones that are well reviewed. Been watching a number of reviews and some 'how size effects taste' stuff, but always hard to seperate what's just marketing material and what's real.

Can't say I'm overly confident in what's going on, but the two I've gotten into were both Connecticut and def were more 'grassy/hay' than I'd expected.

Don't worry about size, yet. Stick with a similar size, like robusto, until you land your taste profile. That's when I'd suggest moving up and down the range to see what you think as you get more wrapper vs more filler. I grab a smoke based off the time I have available.

I haven't smoked cigars in years and was never really "invested" in. But as I'm going to a 50th birthday today, I bought some cigars and on the clerk's recommendation I picked up a pair of this expensive vegan stick so we'll see if the firealarm goes off again.

It's My Father Le Bijou so it's certainly a case of throwing pearls to the pig(s).

I hadn't had a ciagr in 20 years. Since I think a college suite mate pulled a 'box' of what I'm sure were cheap as hell gas station cigars out of his desk drawer and we tried to figure out how to light them so we could be 'cool'. I was in a total wine last week killing time and noticed they had a humidor. Picked up a sample pack and figured why the hell not. Watched some Youtube videos on cutting, lighting and storage of the beasts so they aren't that dry awful thing from my younger days, so my experience was at least better this time.

Wouldn't say it was great, wouldn't say it was bad. Ended up going inside and grabbing a whiskey half way through. I could see maybe repeating the activity a few times a year or when with certain company. However, more valuable than that, at least to me, is knowing relatively how to do it correctly, so that if the situation ever does arrive I'm not a disaster.

questions for you fellas: how do you 'put a cigar out'? and what does one do with a used up cigar the next day?

I got a smoke for you at the meetup. H.Upmann Half Corona. The perfect smoke for an infrequent smoker. It’s short and mild and delicious!
