Anybody have tips on how to take better photos of chips? It drives me crazy that my pictures never show how good the chips really look.

EDIT: Should clarify that I'd like to take the pictures on my iPhone. I have a Canon also, but I don't really know what I'm doing with it.

Natural lighting is preferred to capture accurate colors and shadows/highlights can really show off the mold

SLR Camera combined with natural lighting (outdoors or next to a window). You don’t need to be an expert with an SLR. Just set it to full auto

I will often see glossy black backgrounds or “pure” white. What are people using for that? A sheet of shiny black plastic? Some form of photo backdrop?

+ 1 for the light box.
I picked one up off eBay for $9 with free shipping.
It's a piece of shit, but all it has to do is light up some chips.
I took these with my phone.

I remember @RainmanTrail doing something similar with black backgrounds but I can't find the thread.

Ya, I just have a photo cube with different colored back drops. I like how the color balance turns out with the black background when using my Google pixel camera. If I was using my DSLR, I'd probably use the white more than I do, but just play around with your camera and see what looks best. Photo cubes are great!

Lighting is everything... I prefer natural sources, but these were done with some artificial lighting, using my iPhone.

Setting the right white balance and good lighting are important considerations.

Good composition is obviously very important if not the most important factor imho.

any particular ones you suggest?

Not sure it matters, someone like @justsomedude probably knows the details of what is what.
Years ago I bought a photo tent with incandescent lights, compared to today's cheap alternatives with led's. Both net the same result - clean background and good lighting, which is the key to good photos.
I literally bought the cube in the pic you posted off eBay for $8.79 with free shipping.
It is pretty small, barely can fit six barrels wide so maybe get a little larger one for more flexibility.

Thank you for asking that question. I wanted to ask it and just didn't realize it. Lots of good information here.

The light boxes you can get on Amazon and eBay these days are great. The key thing is to not mix light sources... daylight+incandescence... incandescent+fluorescent... etc.

For general use, eBay listings, poker chips, etc. I think a 2'x2' box should do quite well...

The lens on the back of my phone is constantly picking up fingerprints, smudges, dirt, just from holding the phone and keeping it in my pocket. I try to remember to clean the lens before taking photos, and I've found that helps a little with picture quality & focus.

Thanks, everyone! All good stuff here.

I like the idea of a photo box, but I think I'd rather take more natural shots -- stacks on a table, splash pots, etc. The one @K ALL IN 9 posted is really cool.
