How did these sets come about? I would love to hear their history!

Does anyone have a rough idea of how many of each denoms were released into the wild?

I don't know if they qualify but the Horseshoe Club (Gardena) chips that were ordered, never put in use in the club and finally sold in the Las Vegas store. "Fantasy" chips have even been done with this design and sold later.
