Are you looking for somebody to tell you it isn’t cool to flip that rack in an auction, that you just bought from somebody here, last week? Cause I’ll tell you, I don’t think it’s cool. It’s a hobby to me, not a business. I don’t need to make a profit on every chip I touch. If I buy a rack from somebody here, then immediately change direction, I wouldn’t consider doing anything but passing them along to somebody for the price I paid.
Well sir, let me just say, I have two things for auction, I'm losing on both. If at the end I loose I'm all good with that as its the commitment you make when auctioning. Unless you see your loosing too much or sell it out from under bidders privately and cancel the auction. (Yes I've seen that). I didn't come here to be controversial so If you believe I've done wrong, that's your opinion. Don't sell me or buy from me and I'll return the favor. No problem. and if passing them along is how you wish to do things have at it, that's your business. Your opinion is noted Sir.

I’m not declaring socialism. I’m just telling you what I think, because it seems like you want to discuss it.
I think this is how 95% of the people on here feel. Yes you have the right to change direction I think the “chip karma” thing to do is to just pm the guy that posted backup dibs on the sale you won to see if they are still interested. That’s what I’ve done in the past.

See my comment below. You should reach out to see if there was backup dibs on your purchases so you get ur money back.

As a 30 year law enforcement veteran I can assure you that if the end result of a raffle, lottery or game of chance results in the "Winner" gaining something of value ie. exclusive right to purchase, its illegal, period. **Edit** unless of courseyou have a valid raffle or gaming (on premisis or online) license
easy solution. The seller does the "draw" in private and just announces they have "decided" to sell to person x. This is really all nonsense. 10 people express interest in purchasing something. The seller can't decide who to sell it to. Uses a random method to help them decide. I can't for the life of me see how this could be ever illegal.

All nonsense is absolutely correct.. Its more about the questions asked. More like to fight here when they simply don't like you.. I never said anyone should quit doing anything. I was being a smart ass with the illegal thing and because they don't like the way I'm selling something and think they have a right to try and shame someone into doing it their way. They choose to fight. I could actually care less how anyone wants to sell their things nor should they care about me if they disagree. Then they tag the admin which I'm sure goes over well....

The only real reason someone will choose to sell at auction, is an attempt to get more than they think they can get through a direct sale....
I disagree completely, I have a rack of BCC Riverboat fracs up at auction right now. They're being auctioned because I have no idea what they're worth -- could be anything from a buck to 3 bucks a chip. The auction should tell me. I'm not about to run four or five sale ads with descending prices -- life is too short to waste that much time.

Btw, I have in the past held an auction which didn't attract any bids, so I packed the chips away. I've also held two auctions which got a bit heated between two bidders, and ended up charging the winner less than his final bid.

You never know...

Technically, yes, its a drawing, considered in the realm of a raffle.

You should have gone to law school before spouting pure bullshit. Bet your thirty years weren't in the FBI...

I’m new to this forum, but a veteran in a few other high-end collecting arenas. I’ve learned there are always those few who think they can snipe then flip **within the same community** ... almost always loud & boisterous, the first few months making excuses for their actions, then finally settling in as the “villain flipper”. They inevitably make their pocket change while others scoff, and they secretly wonder why the truly good stuff evades them.

At some point you just learn to not give a shit and let them do their thing. Getting your panties in a bunch does nothing but make your own vajayjay itch.

To answer the question, I prefer in order: 1) check WTBs, 2) private connections, 3) public sale with dibs, 4) auction if something is rare or there’s no frame of reference on price.

The problem with messing with first-come-first-serve (i.e., faux lotteries) is that forums quickly become incestuous, and ultimately end up not attracting new passionate members.

Whole heartedly agree with this!

Scratching my ass in public is also illegal in many states but that hasn’t stopped me from doing it. Just sayin.

The only real reason someone will choose to sell at auction, is an attempt to get more than they think they can get through a direct sale. Don't get me wrong, I have no problem with this, go capitalism. However, it is frustrating to listen to people try and portrait their decision as something magnanimous for the people. "I'm not trying to make money I'm just ________________ (fill in the blank)"

One of the most ridiculous justifications I've heard, is "I want more people to have a chance at getting these chips." And if they are willing to pay you more than the current going rate, I guess that is just the burden you have to bear for being so thoughtful.

You know how much you want for the chips, just list them. If you have chips that are in short supply and you want to get top dollar, then put them up for auction. Like I said, I have no problem with that. Just don't pretend like you are doing it for any other reason than to make money.
I hate stories and rationalizations. Look, it’s for sale, and I know you want to sell it. I don’t care why. If the price is good, I’ll buy it. If it’s not, I won’t. Nothing you say will affect my decision.

that's a shame...

Well, sort of. There’s this one punk who always flew by going insane speeds for driving through the neighborhood. I managed to time a throw so that the egg nailed him right in the head on the day he had his window down.

I've never listed anything in an auction, I've only ever bought one thing in an auction and it was a charity thing. I sell things for what I bought them for. I wouldn't sell things in an auction to drive up the price. I hate bidding against people, I never even bid on eBay, I buy it now or I don't buy it.
Option #3 -- direct sale with lottery drawing.
If this was meant as 'anyone can bids for 24 hours after which I'll draw among them for the winner'. For something you are willing to sell for a good price and a bunch of people will want, I really like this approach but never done it.

It’s great and makes the “want to give everyone a fair chance” argument moot.

So, to stay in socialist form I have now cancelled the auction that pissed y'all off. I will keep the rack so that I can remember before I list anything here again. But for clarification, is the "rule" for making any profit (which I NEVER HAVE) go with the chips forever, because I definitely want to buy all the WTHC's out here at 1.25 per chip because everyone should have a chance and I wont even get into the HSI 5 and 25K's. Ok go ahead..........

I don't think a PCF auction with bids can be cancelled....

This is correct, and it is in poor form to cancel an auction (with valid bids) regardless. I am not a moderator and if a moderator chooses to investigate the situation they will make a decision. But for future reference cancelling an auction with a bid is the improper way to handle the situation, and can result in moderators taking action.
However, I have seen others do it, some get a slap on the wrist or a warning, and others recieve temporary bans.
I would advise in the future to educate yourself a bit more on the forum policies and be more careful before posting an auction. Sometimes it is better to ask someone else first, who can help or advise you, rather than making an ass of yourself.
