I went with these for chips. Expecting 4-6 players at $200 buy in or 10-12 @$20, college aged. Just for fun, not serious money.

what's a good case? I like these:

Apache case $20-30 at harbor freight, btw u might need another rack of 1$

That case is fine plus it holds 600 so if you add on there's room.
Thanks. That is the goal, fill it half-way and the rest later as needed. I went with the Monte Caro's for that flexibility.

is there a benefit to having the chips in trays over the flat aluminum cases?

There is no benefit using birdcage over suitcase types. You have more chip protection & easier storage and transportation in the suitcases. The birdcage in only aesthetically more appealing. Also you should upgrade the chip racks to Justin racks where the chips are protected from sitting on top of each other in those racks. The racks are convenient for collecting chips when coloring up in a tournament and with Justin racks you have more since you can use tops & bottoms.

Birdcages take up less footprint imho. I can carry 1,000 chips easier in a birdcage that the big suitcase.

I went budget heavy in the chips
This comment had me rolling on the floor.

Sorry my friend, but 27c per chip is a pretty low cost (and for some pretty low-quality chips, too). You could have gotten a lot better product for just pennies more.
