Should I Add 50 More Chips to Fill My 600-Count Case or Stick with 550? (27 Viewers)

Hey everyone, looking for some advice on my poker chip setup. Right now, I have 550 chips, but I’m debating whether to get 50 more to fill my 600-chip case or just stick with what I have.

Here’s the current setup:

100 × 5¢ chips
200 × 25¢ chips
200 × $1 chips
50 × $5 chips
Total Bankroll: $505
Buy-ins: $25 (some players like $50 buy-ins too)
Players: 6-8 (want room for growth)
The game is pretty casual and friendly—people don’t 3-bet much, and there’s a lot of flatting preflop since not everyone is super experienced. I know the blinds are low for these stakes, but I’d rather keep things comfortable and fun rather than forcing aggressive betting early on.

If I add 50 more chips, I have to order in sets of 25 per denomination, so I was thinking:

25 × 25¢ & 25 × $1 → Keeps betting smooth without jumping to $5s too quickly.
25 × 5¢ & 25 × 25¢ → Gives more flexibility for smaller bets and keeps early game structured.
Or just leave it at 550 and not overcomplicate things.
Would adding the extra 50 actually improve game flow, or is 550 enough for 6-8 players with $25-$50 buy-ins? Appreciate any input!

I would add 50 more $5 chips. Your game has the potential to grow as people get more experienced and possibly more aggressive. At your current bank it doesn't allow for many rebuys if people all start doing $50.

Most of the people in my game stick to $25 buy-ins, with only a few who like to go for $50, and they’re not really the type to buy back in more than once. Because of that, I’m worried my $5 chips will just sit there unused and never actually hit the felt.

I was thinking of adding 25 more $5 chips, but I also feel like I need something else. While I know that in the long run, I’ll definitely need a lot of $5s, right now I’m just concerned that the preflop betting will feel off and that I’ll end up with too many big chips too soon.

Does it make sense to add more $5s now, or should I focus on smaller denominations to keep the game flowing better?

In my game, most people buy in for $25, and while a few like to go for $50, they usually don’t rebuy more than once. Because of that, I feel like my $5 chips won’t see much action, and I don’t want them to just sit there while everyone mainly plays with the smaller chips.

I was thinking about getting 25 more $5s, but I’m also wondering if I should mix in another denomination instead. I know that eventually, I’ll need a lot of $5s, but for now, I’m worried that preflop bets won’t feel right and that I’ll just have a ton of higher-value chips that aren’t getting used

I dont mind buying another batch of chips in the future if needed, I'm kind of worried I'm going to run out of chips to pay blinds and play early flop and post flop bets since there wont be a lot of lower denom chips

If you're limited to only 50 more chips this probably is the best breakdown for longevity. That barrel of 25s will hold you over for a while at the current stakes and buy ins.

Does your 600 chip case hold 600 chips or 750? Many aluminum cases hold 55 to 60 chips per row, whereas the stated capacity is listed as 600 (50/row)

If using racks definitely fill them or the wobble will dry you nuts.

Honestly 0.5cent chips could be stacks of 10 in your initial buy in. Otherwise they will flood the table. cent stakes are awkward unless you give out a whole barrel for odd stacks but are a hastle to play then. With your proposed breakdown at a full table of 10 players you could go...

Eh, stop worrying. You're asking mooks who obsess over which chips to buy and what is most efficient while most home games run fine with crappy chips in bad breakdowns. You're the only person at your game who will care.

If you get more $5s they won't go bad, good to future proof. If you buy more lower denom/fracs the game may be splashier and people will have to learn to count em, not bad either. Whatever works, this is a good problem to have.

Future proofing is real.

Just because you can get a good set of chips today, a few years from now the manufacturer may not exist. They may change their formula leaving you with two different shades of the same denom. Finally, chips have greatly outpaced inflation over the past 10 years. I simply cannot buy certain chips at their current rate, so all my one table sets cannot be felted most nights, since my game has grown.

Getting all you want is good, getting more in case your game grows or your disposable income increases is better.

What are you buying? If you are buying Chinese customs or any commercial chip from a dealer (also likely made in china) Then you should know that these designs can be discontinued at any time or changed in formula/slight colour/feel variances. It is cheaper to buy an extra few chips at once than sourcing after the fact or having to buy a new set. If your price point is under 50cents per chip then buy everything you want at once plus a roll at least extra of each denom to account for broken/lost chips as well.

The advice given here is hard learned, many members here bought short and have nerfed sets that don't fit the need anymore.

If you want to ecomomize at all I'd cut the 5cent chips to 50-75× and order more $5's instead. If you typically playing less than 10 players you never need more than 10x 5cent chips in a starting stack and never need to issue anymore once the initial buy-in is made. If you ever need more low denom chips you can exchange them for $5's with the player hording the .05 & .25 cent chips.
