As my game grows I am thinking through options for awarding my end of year prize. I would love to hear the thoughts of this community as to what you would do if you were me! Here are the details.

I rake each buy-in/re-buy/add-on for the end of year prize - $2 buy-in, $1 re-buy and add-on.

Points are awarded using this formula:

Sqrt (a * b * (b / c)) / (d + 1.0))

Players become eligible for the player of the year trophy if they play in 5 out of 12 games.

The questions I have are:

Should the top finisher based on points be awarded the prize/trophy

or

Should I do a free-roll with the top 8 for the title and prize?

I would love to hear comments and thoughts on this to continue to improve my game.

Personally I like the idea of a free-roll with the chip distribution being based on points, e.g., the person with the most points starts with the largest stack and do battle to the death for the cash prize.

Our league does the free roll with chip distribution for the top 5 money places. Only the top 10 out of 30 compete at the final table.

Thank you both - I really like this idea. How many extra chips do y'all give for the positions? I would do the top 8, as that's what a table sits.

I do a little bit of both... I try to reward both league points but also Tournament of Champions win... I divide the total amount of league fees in two: the first half goes to the top 4 players in points at the end of the season (40/30/20/10), the second half of the fees goes to the top three finishes on the Tournament of Champions (50/30/20), top 8 players in points at leagues' end get a seat for the ToC. Starting stacks are even for the ToC since players were already rewarded for their season performance. It's worked great... There's competition for the 8 ToC seats until the last game of the season as there is competition for the 'bonus' paying positions... A little bit to everyone so most players are engage to the end...

How do you assign your points?

I use Dr. Neau's formula... I modified that formula slightly so the slope of the points curve is a little less steep, but not by much...

My buy-ins are $30 + $10 league fee for a total of $40... After 20 games, there's around $3K in league fees to be distributed so even for the 8th place in points there's a fair chance he could get $750 if he wins the ToC... Bottom 3 results of each players are dropped...

Is this your WED league?

What is the modification if you don't mind sharing?

SQRT(A*(B/C))/(D+2)*10

A = Number of players
B = Buy-in amount
C = Amount of buy-in of a player
D = Finish

Dr's formula adds +1 to the finish but after a couple of seasons I replaced it with +2... That's it... I felt it grouped the field a tiny bit more...

I am considering also changing A to number of entries instead of number of players... I'm not sure yet... The re-buys are being punished already give the B/C formula... But what I'm thinking is if it's fair for the winner to get X points in a 15 player tournament regardless if there's 0 or 6 re-buys... I go back and forth if I should make the change...

Remember that when a player re-buys, the players that are still at the table have a distinct advantage, since they mathematically have more chips than the player rebuying, and thus have an easier chance to win.

Sure, not as easy as if the eliminated player just stayed eliminated, but easier than the player that rebought.
