I've seen various pictures of casino "buy in chips". What purpose do they serve?

These can typically be won in single table tourneys like satellites and used to buy into a larger events. You can’t change your mind and take the prize money that way, you have to redeem for tournament buyins. Not uncommon to see players at events like the WSOP to have handfuls of these. These partIcular ones pictured may be from something else entirely, so don’t invest in the stock market using this info.

And keeps the registration desk moving quicker if you’re paying with buyin chips rather than cash.

You can often sell them for a discounted value if you don’t want to play the bigger tournament.

... so these chips never get used in play, i.e. bet with into a pot? They're just handed to you when you win a tournament, and then you hand them to the cage when you register for another tournament?

I used to go to Commerce casino during any big tournament series, and they would be running single table satellites all day long. They would do a bunch of them, basically as soon as they had 10 people they would run. 50,100, buy ins etc.

I got pretty good at these single table satalites, players were extra loose and we would often chop at 2-3 players remaining. So it was an easy way for me to play a couple of these and save up for the larger 500-1000 tourneys and get in at a big discount.

It got to the point that I was doing so good at these that I would just go to play a bunch of them and then re-sell the chips that I wasn’t going to use.

There was a year or two that I wasn’t interested in cash games much at all, so for a tourney junkie these single tables were a godsend.

They would pay with these types of chips.

:)

I plan to use the Palms buy in chips... but only as an excuse to use more chips! LOL

Basically at our meet up in Ohio a couple months ago, people were randomly walking in and wanted to pay while I was still counting out starting stacks and had a lot going on. @Marhault was running tourney Director and adding names but not in the same area... so I was handing out bounties as buy in chips, then they would show that to Todd showing they paid and should be entered into the system, also when it was time to hand out chips they had to put their bounty in front of them to show they had paid... It worked fine but part of me didn't really like the Idea of players walking around for an hour with their tourney bounty in their possession... maybe just an OCD thing but again an awesome excuse to get some great 48mm fat hats into peoples hands and off the shelf! Those chips are so freaking awesome, coming up with a reason to use them was a must!! It is difficult to get 40 of them from my experience (for 40 players) but I really like the Idea and hopefully will report back when we actually try this out!! We have 40 of the 100 buy in chips and working on completing the 40 500s now... that way with a multi day event with a couple of tourneys and different buy ins a different chip will be used for each day. Probably not a necessary level of security... but again, seems cool and I like chips!! LOL

If you are a one man show handling everything including tourney Director then you simply just put their name in showing they paid. I get the majority probably think this is dumb... but in our situation it worked well.

I use buyin chips in a similar manner for my year end game. It helps if you have a 2 man operation.

Money = chip
Chip = tournament chips

Seems to me just an elaborate ruse to use more chips! :ROFL: :ROFLMAO:

The tournament I run, the player hands me the $, I hand them a starting stack. Cut out the middle man!

Thank you guys for the like on that comment... I doubt it gets very many! LOL I know it probably seems like a dumb idea but it worked well in that situation! I bet almost everyone that has ever bought those Fat Hat Palms chips has tried to think of a way to put them in play... if you could murder them, none would have ever been available. They would be in some insane epic set!! But I love them for what they are and came up with a use... maybe not a very good one, but a use none the less!! LOL

I get that... IF... everyone is lined up and ready to start at the same time, but I also don't like handing out chips for people to drop... take in the bathroom... whatever! in our situation a few people were selected to take the starting stacks to each table and handed out to the players in their seats! Also should mention our starting stacks were 56 chips, carrying 3 barrels is a little more difficult than say 28 chips in a 8/8/6/6 situation.

But also again it wasn't my game, I had a lot going on and people bothering me asking to pay early... what was the rush, I really don't know. So I took they money and came up with the bounty thing on the fly, also with everything going on to stop each time and holler hey Todd this person paid...it would have been a mess

Plus some people were running late but others paid to buy them in, so I took they money and gave them the extra bounty to hand to the person coming when they arrived... simple, game was already going and I didn't have to get back into the money bag multiple times while trying to play.

again it worked well in that situation... I'm sure some would argue that was armature hour... I'm still learning, don't claim to be a pro and everything that day went very smooth!!
