I got a sample set of Milanos from apache, and noted that the text color of the demonination seems to vary between black and reddish brown. Is this on purpose, a known issue, or are they from different lots, or what? I plan on buy a tournament set of 25-100-500-1000 and would prefer they all match. Here's a pic showing the difference between the 25 and the rest:

That's new, I think. I've only ever seen the black denoms. Hopefully @Apache can help you out if you place an order.

It is the result of poor (or non-existent) quality control processes applied to cheaply-produced chips. Exact spot colors, base colors, and chip thickness may (or may not) vary, too. If these types of things bother you, then the inexpensive china clay chips are not for you.

Imo, it would be pretty crass to hold a reseller responsible for what is typical Chinese factory production output, since the reseller has no recourse.

damnit. ok, i guess i'll check with them next.

I am not suggesting holding them responsible for the manufacturing, but at the same time, I don't think it is too much to ask them to make sure my chip texts match before sending them if I place an order. Assuming each lot is consistent, they would only need to look at the top chip on each roll to make sure they send me a matching set.

I was about to post the exact same text. There shouldn't be any issue with asking Josh to make sure you have all red or all black rolls in your shipment. I don't believe he drop ships his orders. If there's some issue where that's not possible, at least you'll know and can decide if you want to go another route to avoid the issue.

Yeah I agree with this. Resellers wouldn't/shouldn't be held accountable, but they should make it known that there may/may not be text color issues before purchasing.

thanks for the input guys.

text color aside, i think these chips are a great value for the price!

I'll have to look at mine when I get home. They may see play tonight so I would be looking at them anyway

I only have seen black text but I will note that I definitely had some quality control issues with my chips. They had some smudges and some of the molding was already worn away right out of the packaging.

I think they may have been produced too quickly or smashed together with high pressure when being packaged.

I will add however that I really love the Milanos despite the obvious deficiencies I encountered.

After oiling with baby oil, the China clay smell went away and the colors became super vibrant. I have seen the most improvement with oiling come from these chips specifically.

I feel pretty dumb, in the past I honestly thought people were mostly trolling when talking about oiling china clays but now I've heard a few people recently talking about it. Seriously, it helps that much? I would have done it a while ago to my Milanos but I thought there was no way oil would "soak" into a plastic product like that. I mean, I know we call them china clays, but to me they are plastic compared to what real clay is. I'm really intrigued now, I'm going to try some at some point.

it just speeds up the process of what the natural oils from your hands will do to the chips in time.

I'm right there with you! I NEVER oiled any of my china clays but am now a believer. When I pulled out all my sets this weekend I thought, "what the hell, I don't have anything better to do today!" I oiled the edges a barrel of T25s and they came to life. There's too much cross-hatching on these to bother with oiling the faces (IMO) but I usually only oil the edges of my chips anyway, with the exception of my GCOPs. I have read accounts that the oiling doesn't last long term on china clays but after a few days they still look great.

I carefully oil the edges and faces (excluding the sticker) with a tiny paintbrush and a tiny amount of oil.

Seriously it takes hours to do but I LOVE IT and yes... It makes a HUGE difference.

One other thing..

I use Johnson and Johnson baby oil with just mineral oil and fragrance. No vitamins or nothing.

Makes them smell just a hint of freshness.

Wow, I've seen some variance in the "black" color on the Milanos denominations before, but never that far into red territory.

Up until now my assumption has been that the black is not pure black, e.g. C0 - M0 - Y0 - K100, but rather a "rich black" which is typically more like C40 - M40 - Y20 - K100. The point is to add more density to the black ink than it can provide on its own -- take a close look at the "black" background of most magazine advertisements, etc. and you'll see what I mean.

In any case, I had thought the variance in color to dark red/brown was just a somewhat crappy balance of ink when making a rich black ... but the red denoms in the OP are way over the top for just that explanation. Crazy.

Yeah, I can't see that being anything but a design change (which is different from a quality issue, IMO). Even if the denom is supposed to be rich black and the rest of the text is just plain K100, it shouldn't look like that.

Assuming it is a design change, I kind of like it. Very obnoxious to do it mid-run for a stock set though.

Non of my Milanos bought in different batches look like that...I bought from claysmith (brybelly) and they were all good...I did get one batch of one's with different shades of color and varied thickness...same batch also ripped open during shipping...they replaced them for free and had me keep the "bunk" chips...they play just fine.
