Evening Chip Experts,

I have some Rainbow Club .10 fracs and I noticed something interesting. Some have the centers colorized or lightened. Why would someone do this? It looks like someone took some gold paint or something and applied it to just the center of the chip.

Also, is there a way to distinguish editions of this chip? I have some that are not colorized and would like to establish their vintage.

ChipGuide has 2 editions of this Rainbow Club .10 chip...

1970's Edition (Paulson)

1967 Edition (C&J)

Are my eyes playing tricks or is the first chip from the 1970's raised THCs with recessed background? The 1967 edition is just the opposite, raised background and recessed THCs. If this is accurate, it should be an easy way to distinguish. I have never seen the raised THC on a chip before. It would wear down pretty quickly, one would think.

Any chip gurus out there to solve the mystery?

Thanks,
FlushMD

They all look like Christy and Jones to me.
And god only knows why people vandalize chips. Maybe the hot stamps had worn off and that was some crazy attempt to fix them?

How does one distinguish Paulson and CJ? All my chips look pretty similar. I have other Paulson chips. The CJs are supposed to be 1mm wider. Would that be visible if I alternated them in a rack?

I’m honestly not sure. I’m no Christy and Jones expert. The differences are subtle and I’m not even sure what they are. But something in my brain knows them when I see them. I think.

The chipguide lists the 1967 as made by C&J and the 1970 as Paulson.
Not sure if the dates are correct as I believe C&J dissolved in 1965.
Tough to tell without seeing them in person, but the hat/cane recess on the C&J chips is normally shiny and a bit more sharply defined than the Paulson version. C&J chip may also be slightly bigger than the Paulson version and the companies had different color palettes, so colors won't match.
The gold might just be extra gold foil from stamping, but not sure.

C&J shiny hats and very sharp debossing has already been mentioned. Two other things:
1) C&J are always LCV, never SCV
2) C&J colours do not match up with Paulson colours of the same period (in general)

Wow, I'm having a hard time distinguishing my 14 chips. I also have 2 bent chips (like potato chips). Not sure if they are toast or still have some value.

OK QUIZ TIME:

Which chips are Paulson and which are C&J? Any guesses?

Without the chips in-hand (and thus unable to discern material look/feel/sound, weight, and diameter), I'd guess from the pics that they are all the same (and most likely made by Burt Co. and sold by Paulson). Burt's order records for the chips might be located on chipguide.com.

The top row is ever so slightly larger diameter, but it's not an exact science though. I would love to find out that the weight differs more than .5g. I have a gram scale and could weigh them to distinguish brands.

I'd like to sell the lot but the FMV is elusive.

Still no firm history on why some chips are decorated with gold centers and black ink in the THC recesses. Should be fascinating when I finally track it down. I think the casino is still open which may lead to some patrons/proprietors in the know.
