Hi all,
I'm a newcomer to this forum and I'm looking to buy a set of about 500 majestic chips. I play in a home game of 4-7 people (sometimes there are 8-9) and the blinds are most often 5c/10c or 10c/25c (sometimes i'll be 25c/50c, but very rarely).

What are your guys' recommendations for how many of each denomination chip I should get, and what should be the size of the stacks of chips of each denomination for each person's buyin? I'm currently thinking to buy 100 5c, 100 25c, 100 $1, 75 $5, and 25 $25.

It really depends how your game plays. To cover 5c/10c thru small 25c/50c games with up to 9 players, I would recommend at least a 600 chip set:

100x 5c
200x 25c
200x $1
80x $5
20x $25

This fits nicely in chip racks/600ct birdcage. Since you're probably ordering in increments of 25 chips, you can do 75x $5 / 25x $25, if you don't mind how they fit into whatever storage option you have in mind.

This assumes that if your game gets up to 25c/50c, it plays pretty small. Most 25c/50c will require more $5s (200x-300x total for bigger games, add these before adding more $25s).

If you're absolutely, strictly limited to 500 chips in 25-chip increments:

100x 5c
150x 25c
150x $1
75x $5
25x $25

I really prefer to have the extra quarters and ones on hand, though.

Lots of ways to skin the cat for starting stacks and rebuys. I generally do something like this:

For .05/.1 with $5-$25 start stacks: $5 base stack of 10x5c/18x25c. Add up to 10x$1 for stacks up to $15 and top off with 1-2 $5's for stacks up to $25. Rebuys get $1's & $5's. I love having two full barrels of chips to start a game with. The 25c chip will be your workhorse.

For .1/.25 with $15-50 start stacks: $15 base stack of 10x5c/10x25c/12x$1. Add $5's for stacks up to $50, or add 5x$1's for stacks up to $20 and then $5's for stacks up to $50. Rebuys get $5's.

For .25/.25-.5 with $15-50 start stacks: $15 base stack of 12x25c/12x$1. Add 5x$1's for stacks up to $20 and top off with up to 6x$5's for stacks up to $50. Again, rebuys get $5's.

Awesome, this was really helpful, thanks!

^^ this, definitely. You're going to need the 200 quarters for the lower stakes, and 200 $1s for when you're playing 25c/50c. 100 nickels is plenty.

How big do the pots get? ..... You may want more $5's and less $25's

I'd bump the 5's to 100 and get only a few $25's

Yeah, there's not too many rebuys so I don't think I'm too concerned with not enough $5s. the $25s just look too good for me to pass up lol.

No offense, but I'd disagree.

I'd skip the $25 entirely, and add a few of these:

43 mm MSK Jeton. Players will fight to have one with their stack.

If you grow to a $1 game and need a lot of bigger chips, then get yourself some $25 chips and a handful of these:

(I keep my oversize chips/plaques in the cash box, not in the rack, so storage is not an issue.)

You won't need many (or any?) 25s for those stakes. Also consider not getting any nickels and just get dimes instead. If you end up playing 10NL just play with blinds as 10c/10c.

I have played micro for years and finally our group has done away with nickels. I would get this:

100x 10c
200x 25c
200x $1
100x $5

Having full racks is the nuts....having 20 loose chips is annoying...depending on how OCD you are. but believe me seeing 6 full racks is very satisfying vs. 5.5 racks.

If you want to save money you could likely get away with 100x 1s.

I like the plaques and jetons so much just bummed that I can never get them in play.

I'm curious, is there any advantage to having dimes instead i.e. does the game play any differently?

Just fewer small chips on the table. Minimum bet is the big blind anyway so there shouldn't be any difference in play.

Agreed. Having nickels just creates a lot of chips for no reason IMO. They are also a pain to count up at the end of the night when you are 4 drinks in...

Yeah, I'm kind of wishing I would have just picked up 10c chips instead of 5c.

That kind of talk around these parts could get you in trouble. This isn't the 'Most Efficient Way to Play with Poker Chips Forum'. :cautious:

Besides MOAR CHIPES (suffcient standalone reason right there), using nickels (vs dimes) allows for more flexibility in establishing game stakes, and more flexibility in bet sizing once those stakes are established. Those are actual advantages that cannot be accommodated with 10c chips.
