RUST Sucks - New Solution w No Abrasion, No water, No soap, No damage (Paris $2) (1 Viewer)

I honestly don’t think it matters if there is rust on an already ruined chip outside of curiosity. It’s already ruined.

Specifically, the chips from my sales thread are such an outlier that I don’t think it really helps anyone that much, regardless of the outcome. I also lost a ton of time and money on them, and as my sales thread noted, I’d really hoped to just forget them instead of turning them into a science project. But definitely following along. :)
Ah sorry brother. Just catching up on this myself. We’ll keep the thread rust focused. Didn’t mean to pick at an old scar. Thanks for sharing.

My theory is that these chips rust after contact with the oils on a person's fingers. I purchased several thousand of these at the series and put them away. They were in stored in a smoke free pet free home climate controlled and out of sunlight. Several months later when I opened them up I noticed the discoloration. The racks which they were stored in which were brand new at the time had a gluey finish to them - especially in the center tube. Casinochipper22 had the same experience. On some of the chips you can actually see where a finger touched the pink and a few of the side markings were half pink and half rusted. Almost like leaving a fingerprint. I tried to clean these with the dawn bath and electric toothbrush and that did not work. The Mr. Clean Magic Eraser worked perfectly. Two wipes with the thing and it was bright pink. Here's a touched up rack next to a normal one. Also, the racks that the $1 blue Paris chips were stored in were perfect and did have any of the haze. Thanks for your post Onegearmanyspeeds !

Nice work. Curious if it returns, and how quickly.
this

I’ll post an update in a few months with the same rack. See if it’s oozing.
And this...

I had HS Cle $500's. I successfully hand cleaned some, but this looks so much easier than what I did. I was so turned off by the whole rust thing that I wound up selling them. Now I kinda wish I had them back. Lol

Whoa that’s crazy. I’ve not seen a rack like that since I just got my chips recently. Time will tell. I will be using my Paris 2s so time will tell.

Thank you so much for your post!!

The rust behaves similar to graphite so it makes sense this works. Really a fantastic discovery!

Unfortunately I do think the rust will return. It’s present on used (worn) chips, so not something only on the outer surface. On the other hand I think concerns about rust under the inlay are misplaced—that clay is sealed from the air.

My guess is if the chips are not handled the rust will not return. We will see in a couple of months.

Just confirming an earlier conversation regarding the shade of pink. I think the Paris spots are light pink and matches the chips to the left. The Jack snapper is pink and does not match perfectly. And an uncleaned Paris on top for reference.

Thanks a lot for posting this. I just purchased 2 racks and was advised to check your post. Bought a 6 pack of the Staedtlers and have started getting to work.

Also - I didn’t think of doing them as a barrel, started individually on the first couple, then thought I should double check your post… think you saved me a good hour at least.

Before left, after right:

Eraser is super soft, surprised it comes off yellowy:

3 down, 197 to go…

I’m also getting a rack of HSI $25 secondary’s tomorrow - will check if they have a similar issue and if this technique works.

Cheers - Kam

Yep rack up a barrel and line up the edge spots. It’s super satisfying and also helps keep the mint edges protected from any aggressive rub damage.

Post some pics of your HSI I’d love to see the results.

I used to have one of these too from my engineering drafting days. I started looking for one of these old school versions…then I found the $6 model was more fitting for this task.
Hahah, ya my architecture days. Back when we used vellum, tables and drafting setups. Now it's all Adobe, Wacom, Solidworks and 3D printing.

Hey brother, as long as we're talking about Paris $2s. What background color did @Gear use on those labels? They almost look metallic silver. I'll be ordering the same background for Jack Detroit NCV for (nickels or whatever). That color match is really nice.
Not sure - I purchased the racks second hand from @harrysallout - he confirmed the labels were from ChipUp. They look good though - happy with them.

Interesting. So does this just clean up the chips visually or does it also take off the invisible dust that’s only seen under blacklight? Most newer green chips seem to have this issue.

Tried it on some IG PRI $25s, did not do much for the UV ink or dust or whatever on them. Works great on general clean up of edge spots though!

I see a number of these electric erasers on amazon. Does anyone know if the no name erasers that come with the tool work on the chips or do you need to order the Staedtler Mars plastic erasers ?

I just used the white erasers that came with the cheap electric eraser.....they don't have any abrasive qualities (like an eraser does on the end of a No. 2 pencil)...so they appear to be similar to the Staestler version, but a cheaper knock off I'm sure. The good news is they work great!! I have done a whole rack of AS 1s and a rack of Paris 2s and am VERY happy with the results!!

THIS is the eraser I ordered from Amazon.

I just received my rack of $25 HSI secondary.

Before (straight out of box, looks like the new ‘dust’ on them:

After going over edge spots with the eraser. Not sure if it comes through on the iPhone, but in person almost have to put sunglasses on with the ‘After’ as the orange Dayglo spots are so bright. I’m still new to this game, so not sure if a regular chip clean would have the same affect vs eraser. The eraser does come off as yellowy like when I do the pink spots on the Paris 2s though:
