Hello all!

the-sopranos.gif

The Sopranos is obviously one of the best shows ever created. This is my attempt at a tribute set centered around one of the most well-known spots in the show: Satriale’s.

Satriale’s is one of the regular hangout locations for the Soprano crew. At its core it is a legitimate business, but a part of me wishes that the backroom is sometimes used for a private game, or even better- an impromptu game with the crew.

Diving into the chip designs and the story behind each chip...

Revisiting an image of the exterior of the shop, two things pop out at me straight away.
The red chequered tablecloth, and the green chairs. I already knew this was going to be the base of my $5 and $25.

The red $5:

The green $25:

Now creating a $1 chip, I chose to take inspiration from the Satriale’s shop sign.

The remaining colour that pops out at me, is the yellow band with the text ‘meat market’ on it (as well as other elements). I wanted to replicate that, so I chose a yellow base chip with a charcoal edge spot that makes it seem like black text is running across it.

The yellow $1: (I hope a yellow dollar chip doesn't trigger too many people! :ROFLMAO: truth be told, a lot of UK casinos use a yellow chip for £1)

The final chip in the lineup - The black hundo.
Knowing that I wanted to use a black colour base, and referencing Tony's famous black leather jacket. I thought of creating the Italy flag with the edgespots as a way to make the chip 'pop' and also reference his heritage.

I haven't put a huge amount of thought into the inlay design, I'm open to ideas. The only thing I did was add a corrugated metal texture as the base of the inlay, referencing the actual material of the sign outside the shop.

So here is the full lineup, as it is:

Can't wait to hear what people think of it. I don't have plans to get these made yet, just wanted to share an idea with the community.
I also am thinking of adding one or two more chips to the lineup. Possibly one with a pink base (referencing salami, mortadella etc), or a brown base (referencing the espressos Paulie's always drinking).

Anyways, hope you guys like the idea and designs.

It’s a great concept and I like the colors. The label is great. The only thing that throws me a bit is the typeface of the denom and the placement of the dollar sign. Maybe a heavier typeface that isn’t italic/oblique would work, and a smaller dollar sign that isn’t sitting on the baseline.
Great job.

The lines on the label might be too thin to see at scale. Before ordering this set, try printing at size to make sure you can read them. @Lopii9's font changes are an improvement.

I agree. The label colors from Tina get darker and more saturated when printed, so a light touch with that background would have better results.

As a huge fan of both Sopranos and chips I approve. The denom font stuck out to me a bit as well at first glance but I don’t hate it.

One thing that seems like a missed opportunity is that neon pig sign in the front of the store. Not sure how to incorporate it exactly except maybe on the opposite side of the inlay? That said, I like the streamlined look of it as is, I’m just spitballing some ideas.

OR on second thought, maybe the denoms could be in the style of the neon sign as a nod to it. I like the changes @Lopii9 made but I feel like it makes it more of a run of the mill Sopranos set rather than a Satriales fantasy set inspired by the show.

love it! I want a sopranos themed set bad! So many options .. satriales, bada bing, barone sanitation.. i really want an "executive game" chip. maybe we could get some boxes of ziti on the label

did you see @reverseG 's bada bing set he threw together?

if you do bring a satriales cash or tournament set to life or anything from the sopranos world, i would most likely be in on the group buy!

neon pig! maybe a cleaver on a bounty chip. wasn't it centannis for the pilot? centannis commemerative chip.

in the czech republic too we love pork, you ever had our sausages?

Thanks everyone for your input and suggestions. I'm going to take all of your ideas on board and have a long think about it. I'm a pretty impatient person and I just want to see finished products straightaway, but I'm learning not to rush the design process!

Hope to come back after some time with fresher designs. Will keep posting updates while I work through it. Thanks again :)

Very appropriate for the 25th anniversary of the show.

Gotta incorporate gabagool, provolone and vinegar peppers if you're doing a Satriale's set.

With the thicker font for denoms I’d buy this set. Love sopranos. Need a frac though

Also love the edit with the chips In the poker scene.

I stick motherf provolone in my socks at night so they smell like your sisters crotch in the morning

The executive game! Their chips and poker table was so basic for their caliber of players

The yellow just feels out of place. Bumblebee or Pittsburgh steelers.

Would still buy it though

Alright people, here's an update:

Thanks for the comments on the inlay. I played around with the placement of the different texts on Satriale's the logo, shifting the bit that says 'PORK STORE' to above the rest. I feels like this gives the entire logo a bit more breathing room. Which also frees up a space below for a bolder denomination text. Originally I chose that cursive handwritten typeface as I felt it was in tune with the 'Satriale's' text, but I do like how Compacta Bold looks. (thanks @Lopii9)

Now I've always wanted to add a frac to the set, but the issue was what colour and what is it referencing? I did mention in my OP the option I had in the mind, but I was pretty set on the 'cold cuts' option anyway. (click images for full resolution)

So here's the frac referencing salami/mortadella:

Quick mention to changing the edgespot of $25 chip to reference the Langworthy used in the show.

Happy to hear what everyone thinks.

You should just do a full face salami pattern print hahaha.
I totally get that and there's a real push from the community to go a bit creative with ceramic printing. But I wanted to stay a bit 'traditional' in respect to the clay spots. Just felt the current style is a bit more of a homage to the show. It's hard to picture Tony Soprano throwing around chips that literally look like a salami! :ROFLMAO:
