Hi everyone!

I am trying to finalize the breakdown of a small, 400 piece tournament set. I am hoping some of the experts here can have a look at what I have down and let me know if there is room for improvement or mistakes. I have only used 20/20/7/2 starting stacks before so I am not sure if the amount of chips in the starting stacks I have come up with will be okay.

Primary use (fortnightly) - 8 person, T10K starting stack, single rebuy tournament
12 x T25
17 x T100
4 x T500
3 x T2000

Total 36 chips

Remaining T500 and a single T2000 chip colour up T25 and T100 leaving enough T2000 for 10 rebuys.

Secondary use (every two months) - 10 person, T10K starting stack, single rebuy tournament
12 x T25
12 x T100
5 x T500
3 x T2000

Total 32 chips

Remaining T500's and a few T2000 chips colour up T25 and T100 leaving enough T2000 for 9 rebuys.

Looking at getting the following chips:

120 x T25
140 x T100
60 x T500
80 x T2000

Can anyone see or know of another breakdown which maximizes the number of starting chips while still covering a full 10 player tournament and staying within the 400 chip? 8 rebuys is plenty.

Thanks for any help in advance!

Tony

120x25 120x100 100x500 40x2000 20x10000

Starting Stack 12/12/9/2

Edit:
120x25 120x100 80x500 80x2000

10 Player Starting Stack 12/12/5/3

With 10 rebuys the 25s and 100s can be raced off but not rounded up

I like op's breakdown. Allows some 100's for coloring up the 25's.

I don't like making (or players making) change out of the pot, but really, 17 x T100s is over the top.

The only thing I don't like is the lack of wiggle room. If a chip gets lost or broken you have no recourse. In 8 years hosting, I've had 2 chips get chipped (still usable) and 1 chip "disappear", so I know that it can happen.

I agree with Zombie - if we're talking customs, I want guaranteed spares.

I'd actually change out the planned 80 x T2000 for 64 x T2500 - exact same total value in the set, and use the rest for spare chips. Color-up on the 10-player can be done with just a T2500, instead of a T2000 plus a T500. One possible total breakdown:

125 x T25
146 x T100
64 x T500
65 x T2500

I include more spares on the T100, which get the most action and are most likely to need it - and fewer on the T2500, many of which aren't put into play except on "massive rebuy" night.

(I know some people really dislike the T2500 value, but I like it 500-2500-10,000 more in a set that has 25-100 in it; same pattern.)

I think every post in this thread contains valid points

Spares are a must

Starting stack breakdowns are very important

Not enough chips the game slows to a crawl

To many chips has the same effect

The magic number is different for every host

If your players don't moan you have nailed it

I use a 54 chip T$3000 starting stack most of the time with 26xT$100 (I like using three denomination then a fourth for the rebuys followed by a fifth for the addon)

Have a blast

My opinion only (but based on extensive experience, and shared by many):

17 x T100 in a T10K starting stack is too many. Nothing wrong with massive 20/20/15 T10K stacks either, but they aren't very efficient.
Using lower denomination chips (like T100) to color-up other low denomination chips is inefficient and should never be done.
4 x T500 (or even 5 x T500) in a T10K starting stack is way too few when T2000 chips are used (vs using T1000 chips, where T500 chips have diminished value).
Using a T2000 chip is far superior to using a T2500 chip, for a whole slew of reasons which I won't bother repeating here.

All that said, I recommend the following:

T10000 stacks, single-re-buy, up to 10 players:
12 x T25
12 x T100
9 x T500
2 x T2000
--------------
35 chips = T10000

8 x T2000 are required to color-up the T25/T100 chips. 40 x T2000 extra chips allows for up to 8 x T10K re-buys.

chip set:
120 x T25
120 x T100
90 x T500
70 x T2000
--------------
400 total chips

However, this set breakdown leaves you with exactly ~two~ spare T2000 chips, when playing a full table of 10 players with 8 re-buys. As zombie noted above, I strongly recommend getting at least 5 extras of every denomination chip for a total of 420 chips.

It looks a little tight with regards to chipping up and, as all have posted, cupboard extras. I'd splurge for a few extras.
