Show us your HSI frac solution! (3 Viewers)

Ok, so I'm gonna ask the stupid question. What is it about HSI that seems like EVERYONE is using them? Maybe it's just me being new to this whole chipping thing, but I need someone to explain it to me.

It's an inexpensive Paulson chip to get into. The Chips themselves are a decent colorway, with the secondaries having some killer lineups (I'm looking at you $5).

There are plenty going around (fracs are a bit hard to find) and they check all the boxes:
Real casino chips
Quantity out there
Good colorway

Im sure others can chime in but the HSI set was my intro to chipping.

Because when ChipRoom offered chips from this closed casino, there were over 441,000 for sale. It took months to sell them all, and many were between 49 and 69 cents each.
There’s simply a ton of people with full sets of these out there.

So, where are they found now a days(other than PCF classifieds), and what is a fair price? Maybe something I need to look into.

Other than the PCF classifieds, a few racks will show up on eBay, but they’re way overpriced.
The $1 chips seem to go around $110 to $150 per rack depending on condition and variation.
The $5 chips get between $275-300 for primary used and around $400 for the secondaries.
$25 chips are around $250-300 primary used, not sure about secondary.
The $100 are around $6 each.
Not sure the going rate for the higher denoms.

For a long time, people were selling random racks of HSI chips, but they all seem to have lately settled into member’s sets…so loose racks don’t show up very often. There might be some $1a secondaries every now and then, but most often, HSI sales are for sets that may or may not get split up during the sale.

When I was looking for my set, I posted a wanted ad in the classifieds section here. I had some great responses and luck before settling on a set with a member. You might want to start there and see where it goes if you're serious.

As you grow more comfortable here, if you decide to hang around, private dm's have also been known to start negotiations and shake chips from owners who are willing to talk. I know the idea of reaching out to a stranger may seem awkward but plenty of backroom deals have been made that way.

Bottom line: they are out there keep your eyes open if you have your heart set on an HSI set.

A little eye candy:

As a owner of a large HSI set I must agree with the above. The chips are not expensive as some in circulation on PCF yet still now cheap. I personally prefer the primary set being a traditionalist for colours. Honestly it is my favorite lineup of all of the casino chips that I have seen posted on this site. I still aim to have 2% of the primary 1's and 5's eventually. Just over 2% on the rest of the primaries and a rack of secondary $25 & $100 alternates allowing the primary up to be used as a tourney set potentially.
While the secondary chips seem to show up for sale, I rarely see primary chips listed anymore. Like others have said many of these chips have now likely settled with owners as sets. Tough breaking off barrels and racks of a set you have built for specific reasons.
They are popular to me due to
- classic casino colour scheme
- bold easy to read denominations
- real casino history
- I personally rode horses throughout my childhood finishing that career on the racetrack training and exercising thoroughbreds so the horseshoe name has a subtle appeal to me.
- they are Paulsons and stack like bricks.
- the set will likely retain value and popularity for some time given the volume that went into the market.
- both the new and used chips are in good enough condition to stack beside each other in barrel height comparison for chip counts.
- I always wanted a set that if asked can you cover...XYZ, you can say yes to basically all.

My only personal comments onthe chips
- at one time the $1 $5 & $25 primary chips were fairly cheap. Not so much now, so it's tough justifying buying more at the current prices as I already have many.
- others love the secondaries, the secondary $25 hurts my eyes every time I look at them. In person they are nice on the table as they are bright and obvious, but online I scroll past fast. I only bought a racks worth to allow the primary set to work for a t25 and the primary set supplemented for $1/$2 cash with a rack of $25 & $100 secondaries. I have not yet played the set in a tourney, just swapped out the 25/100 to secondary for a cash game that wouldn't break the 2 rack bank.
- as for tourney set prospects I now prefer 36mm chips.

It has grown since then but it's most of the set.

I’m packed. See you in a couple of hours.

The Paris hot stamp $1 chips were used for my conversion to the HSI 0.25 cent frac poker chips.

I bought a bunch of the Paris hot stamp $1 chips from Yarbs not too long ago. He's got a bunch left in case anybody is interested. Here's his posting for those chips:

Did you have these chips milled before you relabeled them?

This is the before and after.

Yes, the chips were milled. Just FYI, the picture was taken at an angle. So the ridge you see is universal across the chip. The color blend looks like there is no ridge closest to where the picture was taken and the shadow will show up furthest away from where you took the picture (which is what you noticed).

As for why I bought the HSI chips, it was one of those things where I searched far and wide on all posts for what I found were the nicest looking chips. It was between the Indiana Grand (IG) poker chips and the Horseshoe Southern Indiana (HSI) poker chips. I absolutely love the mix of the IG secondary $1 and the bearclaw $5 chips but ultimately, I thought the HSIs were just a hair better. Apparently a lot of other people have the same adoration for these chips that I do.

As for why I got the HSI fracs done, I always echo the sentiment of one of the PCF members that I read: It is hard to see people (especially friends) lose $700 - $1000 in a cash game setting. That's something I've personally seen. With the fracs they can buy in for $60 - $100 and have an enjoyable liesure time socializing for the evening knowing if they lost money was at least a manageable amount.
