Just returned from a Beau Rivage trip. Crushed the holdem and PLO games on Friday and Saturday and despite getting murdered in PLO game yesterday booked a decent win overall for the three days.

Nice job! Sorry I didn’t make it back from NO in time to meet up with you. Really enjoyable place to play though.

No worries! Hopefully you enjoyed and the weather driving wasn't too bad. Honestly, I hate the new room so much. It's so frigging loud and the smoke is bad. Shame every casino continues to shrink the poker rooms for other stuff (a seafood restaurant really?). Still love the games and the action, but yeah, this trip was a little less enjoyable than usual due to the noise.

Any tips or secrets to jumping into a casino poker game? I’m used to home games but I recently moved and haven’t been able to get traction on any on my area but local casino has games on weekends.

Are we talking cash or tournaments?

What blinds did you play at in your home games? It can be quite the difference between playing .25/.50 in a home game to 1/3 in a casino, for example. Budget is also important. You want to allow yourself to buy-in for at least 100+ big blinds.

Last few home games have been .25/.25. I think you’re right about upping the budget. Local Casio smallest stakes are 1/3 which would need probably $300 for a bank roll. I think it’s nerves too. Can play relatively comfortably online but get pretty nervous playing in person which leads to needless mistakes

You’ll want to bring at least $600 to play 1/3 at the casino. Obviously, the money being disposable helps with nerves. The only way to get better is to just play though. Just nit it up your first few trips, you’ll ease into it.

This is probably an extreme perspective but I think your bankroll should be 500BB+ for any game you sit down to. You have to be able to rebuy when the variance gets you good.

Of course, you should have significantly more for a bankroll. I just didn’t want the guy showing up to the casino with one buy-in on his first trip, sucks to brick out early and go home quickly.

variance seems to be my whole life lately haha. Have you found 500bb has worked for you or is this a standard amount?

Eh it's just a number. I've often heard people say "3 buyins". I think you always obvious want to buy in for the max. If the max is 200bb then 3 buyins is 600bb. I don't think the specific number matters. What's important is that you can top off frequently when down and rebuy when needed (imo). I also think it's a helpful way to guide what stakes you play. If you always follow a rule like this you won't sit down to a game you're not staked for.

This isn't a universal opinion tho, I am sure there are others here who think that is way too conservative and it does really depend on your playstyle.

But here's an example. Buddy of mine recently went to the Encore to play 1/3 there for the first time, managed to keep his stack relatively level over a few hours, then lost it all-in pre JJ vs QQ. He really wasn't prepared to spend that much and felt defeated and left the table. If you are the type of player who is going to end up in spots like that (which I think you should), then you are going to want the bankroll for several hands because premiums like that won't always hold but they statistically might the next time around
