Bad chips are easy to duplicate. Dice chips are everywhere for pennies. 1 or 2 chips from your pocket onto the table puts you right smack dab into the money.

I'd much rather stand up once an hour to stretch and win than to sit comfortably and be fleeced.

A well run game is a secure game. Plastic cards (tougher to nick), difficult to forge chips.

Excellent point.

How about this:
Don't play poker with Douche bags>Table>Chairs>Cards>Chips :)

You put chips LAST? WTF?

A wise man on this site says to wait and get the perfect chips (I think his name is Tom). If you're sweating the cost of a table and chips I would definately get the table 1st. if you have the coin get it all. But if you don't I would start with a good table.

Not even sure why put cards on there as they are a minimal investment. I was copying someone else's work :)

That's defeatist talk from anyone with two fully functional kidneys.

Just my opinion of course:

1. Cards usually are the cheapest quick improvement. Not a fan of Cartamundi's, but they are better than paper cards. I use Copags and Fourniers -- both excellent.
2. Depends on existing table/chips
I have 3 tables. Primary is the 94"x42" rectangular dining room table. A neoprene pad ($100) covered with a neoprene topper ($40) and it's a pretty nice surface to play on. It's padded but not too soft. It's not perfect -- no rail, and I'm sure other surfaces slide better than neoprene, but neoprene is easily washed. My secondary table is the 84"x42" rectangular kitchen table -- same set up, just a little smaller table. I can fit 10 at each table, though the kitchen table is a little more crowded. Third table is a pressed wood 8' oval on two U-shaped legs. I cover it with a non-slip rug holder and put an uncinched Poker Hoody on top. If I want to add a neoprene topper on it, I can. That's probably the best table top, but a much bigger pain to set up. I have about $140-150 per table in pads/toppers. I have no viable options for upgrading my tables, but I can live with what I've got. For most of my players, my set up is much better than other places they play, unless they go to a casino.
You can do a lot with a neoprene topper! It can make many surfaces pretty workable, so it's not that much to upgrade the table in most cases.
Chairs -- Dining and kitchen chairs -- very comfortable. I some some padded church-type chairs (800 lb limit) that are very comfortable. I have 8 folding chairs when I have more than 22 players (limited to total of 30 players). I've played in unpadded folding chairs -- not much fun for long! I'd upgrade that if my options weren't comfortable.
Chips -- I have China Clays and ceramics. I've kept buying a little higher quality sets. When I've sold them, it's at a huge loss, but I always felt the upgrade in chips was worth it.

I could easily have spent 2-3x as much and I'd have better everything. I could get my wife to go for a nice convertible table (high quality poker table with a dining top), but that would be a huge expense with marginal benefit. My wife likes her tables right now.

I currently have CPS chips, ceramic chips, and will soon have some custom-labeled Majestics too. I could have gotten (or could still get) custom CPC chips, or stock Paulson's. They would be much nicer. Practically speaking, I host 13 times a year. I play in another game 12 times a year. I'd love to find a third monthly game. But if I did, and we always used my chips, my chips would average being used once a month.

Is it really worth the extra to go much nicer? There is no right or wrong answer, just a preferred answer for you.

Whenever I go to a new house on a first invite I always try to take a set up of plastic cards. Two reasons. 1. To be a gracious guest in their house. 2. God forbid they don't have plastic cards and I have to play with a paper deck..............

I do the same. I bring plastic cards and my Milanos. Just so they have options. If their stuff is equal or better, I'm not even going to mention them, but if they are rocking the dice chips, I'm going to make a suggestion. If they don't see the error in their ways, I won't return.

No thanks bro, these dice chips are official casino weight.

Wait!! People buy chips only if they are going to use them all? Shit...I have chips I haven't put in play in years. Now I have had nice romantic evenings with them, but after spending all my money on chips, I don't have any money to play pokah. :D

I neva play the pokaz...stacking those clay round thingy on my strange looking round table keep me sane (barely)

Yelling at random people is a distant second....that's why my wife & kids give me a chip allowance

Which is why I stock up on prestige cards when they hit BOGO at Walgreens

:)

I do like Zombie -- take cards and chips. If they don't play with my chips, I try to take my revenge by winning though. I can't remember the last game where they didn't use at least some type of plastic cards.

When I hear the "official casino weight," I always ask, "So do you play in casinos a lot?" So far if they made that comment, the answer has been no, and usually never.

Decision was made for me a week or so ago... Found £70 I didn't know I had one day, saw an eBay advert for an 8 seater table going for the exact same amount the same day, reduced by 66% due to a slight tear in the railing.

Obviously it's nothing like the tables some of you guys play at, but it's good enough for me! A definite upgrade (speedcloth, not felt, for example) plus I sold my old table too.

So... Table sorted, now for the chips....

I would upgrade my chips first if I were you. Unless you regularly have more than 8 people that want to play, then I would go table first.
