Hi all - I'm curious to get some advice from those of you with some experience in poker setups. Long story short, I'm going to be moving into a house within the next year where I'll have a permanent space for a "real" poker set up. I'd still like to get back into hosting a regular game sooner however, and am considering using my garage (have young kids in the house, so wouldn't want to have the game at the dining table or something similar.)

My question is, knowing I'd need a table/chairs set up for the short-ish term (like a year) - what would you recommend considering? Ideally, I wouldn't want to spend a pile of money, just want something functional (but something that could potentially serve as a secondary table set up in the future). Any thoughts on decent/cheap stock poker tables with folding legs, same for chairs, etc.? Any of you done any air conditioning or heating in your garage during the extreme months of the year?

Build a folding portable topper that fits on a five- or six-foot rectangle folding table. Extra tables are always handy around the house, and the table-top can easily provide your second-table option in the future. BYOC works well for now.

If wanting a decent cheap folding poker table, take a look at one of these for less than $146 shipped to your door:

My buddy has this table brand and it has held up for us as a spare table for over two years. It's super portable, and mildly comfortable. I would second this recommendation unless you can find a decent table on Craig's List. For chairs, I used the flex folding chairs from Home Depot that my players liked. I hated them, as a plus size guy they tended to lean forward in the seat, but for under 250 lbs most of my players said they were the most comfortable folding chair they have used. Also you can find stacking banquet chairs all over Craig's list.

I live in Dallas, so as you know the summers are extreme. We installed a Mr Slim in the garage as it is my wife's fitness studio. Even when it is 100+ outside she can keep the garage cooled to 70 degrees with 12 people in there. Cost of entry is not cheap, ours ran $4k installed with electrical run. I know this isn't the 'cheap' option you might be looking for, but it's the best option.

Yeah..definitely not going to do that for just a year or so. :) Thanks for the rec on the chairs.

When my son was small I didn't start my games until 9pm so I could put him to bed before we played in the house.

Did you do anything set up wise to control or supress the noise? The way my house is set up, it's kind of a corkscrew through the living room, to a hall, to the stairs, to the loft/hallway/bedrooms - open, but winding - but the table is right under one of my kids bedrooms. I have a white noise machine but that may not cut it.

Them waking up would only be part of the problem - I taught my four year old to play and she loves it. She'd be coming on down to try to pull up a chair.

My kid was always a solid sleeper. Once he went down that was it. The sound of shuffling chips has a soothing effect?
