Ran into this post today written by @TX_Golf_N_Poker that foresaw my journey since i have joined - i recently acquired a reasonably priced paulson set and i am still looking at ads.

Otherwise, if you stick around, you will be in the same boat as all of us. I had the exact budget you had when I joined here.
  • My first set was within budget.
  • My second set was very reasonably priced Tina cards molds, but I decided to purchase enough to host a three table tournament, so went over budget by a couple hundred dollars. I've used these chips once!
  • I stuck around and kept admiring all the neat casino sets of real clay Paulson chips.
  • I spent a very small amount on some clay chip samples. I loved them!
  • I had the opportunity to buy a very reasonable set of clay chips. Not Paulson, but neat old vintage casino chips. When I joined here, I was amazed that some people spent over $1 a chip, and flabbergasted that others were spending $5 a chip and up! That is freaking insane!!!
  • So the set mentioned was $700 for 600 chips. Yes, over $1 per chip. I found ways to justify and made the purchase. That's it! I have all the chips I need!
  • Fast forward 3 more years to today. I have at least 7 or 8 playable sets. I have racks of other chips for sets that I'm building. I spent $8 a chip for one rack in a mixed casino tournament set. Then $15 a chip for one barrel for my top of the set, 43mm chip! I have cappers that cost over $20. And I am nowhere close to being a high roller compared to many others here.
  • All this, because I wanted one or two cool sets of chips for about $300 each.

And it's still going on. A couple weeks ago I bought a limit set. 1600 workhorse chips and 200 value chips. A very cool set!

Wait for it...

that is wild. Have you tried knitting instead :wtf:

At least you're "investing" in quality chips. I just bought 4,000 plastic chips because they looked cool and had nice hot stamps.

I only needed about 2,500. And thought I was making a great buy because they looked pretty. Lol. Plenty of ways to throw away money nowadays. At least we get some entertainment with poker chips.

I am embarrassed to admit it, but I have about 6,600 chips spread among 6 sets, clay and ceramic. Plus a Barrington table.
and I don’t currently have a home game.

But oh…. am I ready!

So wait... Are you saying you're supposed to actually use your chip sets in hosted home games? Damn! I knew I was missing something about this hobby!

Full disclosure. I too have a Barrington, and I have hosted about five formal games and a few impromptu games with family in the past year. And I travel with my chips and a table topper. So they get some use. But not near enough to justify what I have spent and the total number of sets I have.

Just put in an order for a 600-chip add on to my 400-chip tournament set. I've hosted two tournaments and both were single table... When I started out I was just trying to find what was the best value for chips under 30c each.

My journey was somewhat similar.

Summer 2024 >Oh cool Dice chips come in yellow and pink, can buy some for color ups.

September 2024
>Oh cool china clays are "Only 37c" locally let's buy ~1,800 chips for 60MTT.
>First event had more people so let's aim for 80, buys another ~600 chips.

Early October 2024 >Oh cool there are Panda KGBs available for even cheaper. Let's buy 500 for a small cash set. <- I don't even play cash was just going to collect these.

Early October 2024 >Oh cool plaques are available online at Apache. Hmm if plaques are "only" $8/plaque I might as well get some actual chips

October 2024
>Hmmm Tiger Palace cash set 500 chips is only ~$3,200. <- I thought I would stop here. I haven't even gotten the Panda KGB Chips in

October / November 2024
>Hmmm might as well make it a tourney set seeing as people have some for sale in classified
>Hmmm the set is almost done let's pay premiums on the last few pieces

To date the collection is ~$22k cost ($19k if OG Ken pricing). Paid collectively $2.3k premium on top of Ken pricing over 2800 chips which is "only" an extra $0.8c per chip so not too bad.

I hope to cut it off here but I can see the following happening in 2025:
>Hmmm since I have most of the $25s and the $1k and $5ks are available on Kens sight I might as well upgrade the T1 tournament set to T25 tournament set. The $1ks are "only" $150/barrel might as well.
> Hmmm might need a Jack Detroit cash set <- I still haven't played cash lol
> Hmmm might need a TP VIP cash set <- I still haven't played cash lol

Dice Chips - 2005
Different slug chips with stickers - 2011
BR Nevada Jacks - 2023
Tina set x2 - 2024
Paulson RHC over label set - 2024
Chipco limit set - 2024

Not only is the disease real, but it spreads more quickly once you find PCF.

Going back to the old ChipTalk days, but I seem to show more restraint than most around here ... and I actually host a home game. :)

Started with weekly single-table tourneys and a cash game on the side back in the Moneymaker days, then switched to strictly cash around 2010-ish.

2004: Nevada Jacks Skulls 800pc tourney set + NJ Mardi Gras 800pc cash set (sold)
2008: Faux Clay 1000pc cash set (sold, sadly)
2021: Apache CC Royals 1000pc cash set (sold)
2023: Key West CPC 1000pc cash set (probably my BIFL set, but never say never!)

So busting out the barrington, topper, and bluetooth neon lighting. Along with a large tourney set to which you deal starting stacks to yourself and 9 stuffed animals doesn't count as a "home game"???? I am doing it wrong then.

Doing it wrong depends on who is winning in this scenario.

Fall 2023 - First purchase of some slugged chips off amazon

Winter 2023 - Purchase other random poker accessories, as well as some add ons to my original amazon set

Late Winter 2023 - Grossly overpaid for some Monte Carlo chips off amazon, at the time they were the most beautiful chips i’ve seen.

Mid Summer 2024 - Discover ApachePokerChips.com , find Hobbyphilic on youtube. Learn about China Clays, cards mold etc… Also first taste of PCF as a lurker, and the mysterious “Paulson Brand”

Late Summer 2024 - Purchased 2 racks of IG $5 and a rack of Majestic Star $1s. Had literally just bought a 1000pc Taj Mahal cards mold set. Fell in love with Paulson, despite the price.

Fall 2024 - Make a PCF account, and finally realize and embrace my love for poker chips. Still try to keep my budget, but it is slowly slipping.

Current - Budget had been thrown out the window. Just spent an absurd amount on a Harrah’s NO Secondary set. I feel no regret. Have also fully expanded/removed/added onto my first mixed set. I always tell myself: “that’s it, no more”. I lie to myself. But maybe, with a wounded and bleeding bank account, I might be able to hold off for a few months.

My college buddies think i’m crazy… I think I am too. Aren’t we all? But in the end, at least I can sell my chips… right?

Bought almost 200 gassers from Chinese restaurant.
Have 5 tables in my garage and have hosted once (meetup) in the last 12 months.
I have a commercial grade margarita/frozen drink machine in my cart for the next meetup in 2025? 2026, idk.

Not one upping. Just preparing those rare few who complete the chip journey and what comes next.

Prior to July 2024, playing a monthly(ish) home game with a bunch of friends only in cooler months because the guys shop we play in is not air conditioned and it gets hotter than the 7th circle of hell in south Mississippi. Playing .25/.50 NLHE $20 buy in with realtree camo chips.

July 2024 - run across Hobyphilic on youtube while watching gambling videos. Think, "what this PCF site?" Create account, would have been better cutting off a limb.

August 2024 - Purchase my first set. Tina no mold 39/43mm Stardust tribute set. Hook up with @inapinch and find out he's a MS collector (although living north of the Mason-Dixon line).

Sept 2024 - Find out on PCF what a Ratrod set is and fall in love with the chaos of it. Gotta love triggering peoples OCD. Start building an all MS Casino ratrod cash set.

Oct - Current - 500+ chips in on the ratrod set. Made a poor purchase on a Mr Lucky mold limit set. Started a Isle Pompano cash and tourney set that is currently over 3000 chips already. Purchased 4 Michael's coin racks that are hung on the wall for singles and samples. Bought a 600pc Sun-Fly ceramic blanks set. Bought 800 Tina blanks because, I don't know why. Bought almost 1000 of the Leisure Cruise sunken treasure chips. Bought over 1000 Devil's Poker Room ceramics, dunno why. Just purchased a China cabinet to hold all of this stuff. Working on plans for a 66" long oval table build so I can start hosting short handed sessions here at my apartment.

So less than 6 months on PCF, moved to new apartment with extra bedroom to become office/poker room. Nearly 10,000 chips purchased, not counting what has been sold. New furniture for chips and poker games. My wallet is over in the corner in the fetal position, rocking back and forth, crying and saying something about "stop touching me there." Friends think I'm out of my mind, wife already new i was nuts, and never did anything half way. Off the deep end or nothing at all.

Loving every minute of it. Talked to some great people. Trying to convince the wife that attending a PCF meet up in Iceland is a great idea for a vacation for her and I. (I'll let you know how that goes)

After reading this thread I might consider deleting my account. This “chip” thing sounds worse than getting a serious fentanyl or opioid addiction. At least those addictions you can methadone to help get clean, what do you take for chipping?

That cracks me up because there was a guy who used to post here and when he'd occasionally mention his game, I was convinced that was exactly what was happening at his house.
