US customs is checking outbound packages? Why do they care about what's leaving the country? Isn't their job to secure things coming in? So strange.
I’ve experienced this on several occasions with FedEx packages sent from Canada to Switzerland (care packages from my parents back home). FedEx routes everything through Memphis and in those cases, packages were opened (and several items were damaged, incl a handmade blanket on one occasion)) by overzealous U.S. customs agents. Recourse? None.

My parcels with Fedex have flown out of Oakland, CA via Honolulu, HI where they receive customs export clearance done there before hitting Sydney Australia.

Despite all my perceived grievances Im quite happy with the service and will continue to use them over USPS. A parcel arriving with chips, albeit a few damaged by customs is better than no chips showing up at all.
