A couple curiosities came up in a low-entry home tournament I was playing in on Friday...

- Can you execute a rebuy in the middle of a hand? A player tried to but a number of others objected. It never occurred to me that you could rebuy during a hand and I've never seen that situation come up, so I don't know what's the norm on that. TD said no bueno...play w/what you have until the hand is done.

- Can you execute a rebuy once you've felted in a tournament? Or is that considered a re-entry? The TD was allowing that and calling that a rebuy, but I thought a rebuy required you to still have chips.

No. Rebuys must be done after the hand is played. Otherwise it's the same as adding cash to your stack in the middle of a hand during a cash game. What you have at the start of the hand is the amount you have to play with.

Not sure I understand. Once you've been knocked out you can rebuy straight away if it's a rebuy tournament. If you are talking about sitting out a few hands before rebuying I'm not sure.

EDIT just reread your post. We only allow rebuysafter a player is knocked out OR if a player has under 1 BB

Re-entry to my understanding is being able to re-enter a tournament on a new round (multiple day 1s)

This drives towards the root of my question. I thought rebuys generally had to be done when you were under a certain amount of chips, but before you were knocked out; after being knocked out of a tournament, I thought your tournament life was over unless it allowed a re-entry.

I wasn't aware of re-entry tournaments where you reentered on a later day...that's interesting to me. If you come in on a later day, the blinds are increased so you start w/less BB's, right?

Generally re entry is on the "same day" but a different day (or time) think Wsop main event has day 1a 1b etc. so in a re entry tournament if you are knocked out on day 1a or could re enter on day 1b. Same starting stacks same blind levels.

stocky has it correct, or at least his explanation matches my general understanding (and terminology).

A re-buy is additional chips that are purchased after the start of the tournament (usually a full starting stack, but not always). Typically requires the player to have lost their entire starting stack, but sometimes merely requires that it drop below a certain level (usually 50% or less). Frequently re-buys at 50% reload points are only 1/2-stacks (for 1/2 price of initial buy-in), so that players can never re-buy to an amount of chips that is larger than the starting stack. Events that require players to be busted before re-buying usually require that an immediate re-buy is performed, else player is out permanently. Events that allow re-buys without busting out only allow re-buy chips to be added to existing stacks between hands. Some events limit the number of re-buys allowed per person, others allow unlimited re-buys.

A re-entry is a brand new fresh start in the event, where all players start with equal amounts of chips at the L1 blind level. Usually multi-day tournaments where several 'starting day fields' are later combined at the same blind level, but sometimes re-entries start on the same day as the initial field. Some events limit the amount of entries in the initial field (due to space constraints), and offer re-entries to only to new players or players who busted out of the initial field. Others allow multiple entries into more than one 'starting field', and once the fields are combined, multi-start players play on with their biggest stack (while losing the others).

An add-on typically refers to additional chips that are offered for sale later in the event, usually at the end of the re-buy period. Occasionally tournaments offer add-ons prior to the start of an event, and there are even tournaments which do not allow re-buys but offer optional add-ons after a specified length of time has elapsed.

Some purists might argue that an event that allows re-buys without the player being busted are actually selling add-ons, since the player still has chips.....

No matter what you call 'em, new chips should never be added to the stack of a player that is in the middle of a hand.

Vast majority of online tournaments allow rebuys if you have any amount of chips up to your initial starting stack (yes, this means you can immediately rebuy at the start to double your stack and can double rebuy when busting). Add ons are normally done at the end of the rebuy period and are often for more chips than an initial starting stack (for the same price) due to the fact that blinds are now bigger making each chip less valuable than they were in the beginning.

Example, $10 tourney w/ $10 rebuys and one $10 add on. Initial stacks are 1500 and the add on is 2000. If you bust the last hand of the rebuy period (a very, very common event in these as players are in full build-or-rebuy mode) you can double rebuy and add on for $30 giving you 5000 chips.

The WSOP circuit events are re entry events but get you back in on the same flight as long as you aren't passed the rebut period. In the case of it the distinction is your re entry is like buying into the tournament anew and results in a completely new seating as well.

In our league game we call them rebuys. You have to be out of chips before purchasing a rebuy.
