Customs as in "Import Tax" ....

My set has arrived in the UK from the US and is apparently awaiting customs clearance.

So... To anyone in the UK who's been in a similar position....

Anyone know what happens next? Do they write? How can I pay? Online? How long can I expect the chips to gather dust before their final journey to their new home?

You get a letter saying monies are owed and the amount.

Think it's 20% of combined purchase price and shipping cost. Plus an admin fee (£8 the last time I got one).

They'll tell you which office it's being held at. You can go in and pay and collect your parcel or pay over the phone and they'll deliver. I always collect mine in person. You need id/proof of address if you do that.

There is a way to save some taxes, if you order huge chipments from the US.
I did so many times during my bonkers times. PM me if you wanna know how.
It's a very simple method.

wait wait wait 20%?

so if you order a custom set that totals $1,000 including shipping, you have to pay $200 towards import tax? You serious?

Yup.

By rights, when I buy chips from the US I should be getting a 15% discount. You know it's fair.

In Finland we have 24% VAT. On top of that we have to pay a small customs fee.

Ouch. I hope you can a-fjord it.

(See what I did there? Ignore the fact that there aren't any fjords in Finland - not that I'm aware of, anyway).

Although it's usually insignificant in the whole scheme of things, that £8 never fails to annoy me.

Toby is bang on the cash with this reply in my experience also. Sometimes a wait of a week till you get a letter, but if you're refreshing the USPS shipping page like every good chipper, the ref number and info will appear before the letter drops through your door.

In Australia its 10% gst and 5% some other tax if over $1000aud. So depending on exchange rate you could get mildly fucked or hugely fucked.

If I had order 12 months prior I wouldn't of paid any tax. But then I wouldn't of had the fdl mold, so small price to pay IMO.

For Canada, it depends on the province. Here in Ontario, it's 13% sales tax if the item is worth more than $20 CDN, as calculated when it hits the border (link). There are also additional fees (brokerage fees, etc).

That said, I grew up in an area with a 20.91% effective sales tax rate, so this doesn't seem that bad to me...

Can't believe the shipment has been sitting in Customs, for longer than it took to get here from the States.

Tomorrow, it'll have been waiting there for a whole week
