Hi,

I'm looking for a designer (a patient one and preferably someone with OCD tendencies) that can help me add the finishing touches of 2 chip set concepts I'm working on. I've never done this before so I don't know how to do anything. I've gone as far as I could on my own and need some help to get to the finish line. Some design choices that were made were because of my personal limitations. So if you see something below that doesn't make sense, that could be why. I generally like designs that are neat, clean and minimalistic, but want to avoid it being boring. I'm open to new ideas as well.

Designers, I'm willing to pay. I'm willing to accept free work too if you are feeling charitable. If you need more information, please respond/private message me. I've never written on a forum before so if I'm forgetting something or breaking some kind of unwritten rule/code of conduct, I sincerely apologize. I used the chip design tool provided by CPC to make these mock-ups. I think there is a tool to share the link which I will do upon your request.

Some descriptions on the set.

Set 1: Strip poker set. A chip set strictly used for strip poker. Is this a thing?

It's a 3 denomination set. I wanted a set that was sexy without being smutty/obscene/offensive. I wanted to achieve an overall minimalistic design that is also exotic and exciting. To achieve this, I ended up with a two-tone and two-sided chip. It's a fan made chip based on the lingerie company "Agent Provocateur." The other side has sensually appealing/suggestive silhouettes. The images are what I found on the internet. Two of them are from the show "Mad Men." Things I expect from the designer:
  • Ensure the images used is of appropriate quality to generate clear and crisp images on the chip. If not, please assist me in finding better files/images or help create the image it self.
  • Opinions on the color choices. Are they good? Are there better choices? Do they match or complement each other? Does the chip color match/compliment the color on the logo/image.
  • Opinions on the images themselves. Are they good? Are there better choices? Can you create better ones?
  • Are images on the chip placed appropriately? Centered or strategically off-centered. Are there better placements?
  • Opinions on the inlay shape. I am spending an extra 60 cents per chip on the clover shape. Does it add value to the chip from a design perspective?
  • Opinions on whether the chips will turn out as good as I think it will.
  • Whatever else you can offer me as your talents as a designer and someone that has a trained eye.
  • Are the chips/design a high enough quality that it looks like a luxury company could/would have produced a chip like this. (I don't want it to look fan-made. I want it to exude quality).
  • Disclaimer: I'm not going to be selling these chips out to the public. They are for my personal use and an exercise in creativity. Just thought I put it out there incase there was a concern about copyright infringement.
The end goal is that I want to have made every decision as thoughtfully and conceptually consistent as I can.

Set 2: Cash game/Tourney Set. Another fan-made fantasy set based on the Hermes company. All bullet points mentioned above goes for this one in addition to:
  • The images I found are in black. I think their signature colors are orange and dark brown. How would it look if the images/logo was in the dark brown instead of the black? If they were to look better against the chip color choices, would you be able to recreate the logo/images for me in dark brown?
  • What are your thoughts on hot stamping the images rather than having an inlay for this particular piece?
  • I am concerned that one of the images (circle "H" logo) is not a high enough quality. I feel it is blurry, but I can't tell. What are your thoughts?
  • What are your thoughts on the color choices of the chips as a group. Do they look like they are part of the same set? Does the color choices appear to be consistent with the associated company?
  • Does it look like a company that makes 25K purses would have made chips like these?
  • Does it matter which side is the "front side" and which is the "back side?"
  • Can you offer additional opinions?
Here are the pictures of the Hermes set:

Lastly, I've never ordered a custom set before and would like assistance with the purchasing of the chips themselves through CPC. I called them this morning and the person I talked to made me feel like the questions I were asking were stupid/obvious or whatnot. I didn't feel competent at all getting answers to my questions and certainly won't feel competent making a custom chip order. I feel like I'm going to mess it up if it were left to me. Once I'm ready to pull the trigger, I'll be purchasing both sets as a single set so that I can cover the required minimum number of chip purchases.

I rather have not revealed my chips and concepts out in the open like this because how foolish I might look, but I read somewhere that providing more information is best when trying to obtain help so here it is. Hoping to find a designer that understands what I'm going for and helps me create it.

Best regards,

I called them this morning and the person I talked to made me feel like the questions I were asking were stupid/obvious or whatnot. I didn't feel competent at all getting answers to my questions and certainly won't feel competent making a custom chip order.

I worded this very poorly. I didn't mean to intend that the person answering my questions was rude to me. I meant to portray that I had a difficult time communicating properly or getting my thoughts across in a manner to get the answers I needed. Thus, I feel I will mess up my order if I were to do it alone.

Welcome to pcf mate. There's a lot of info there so allow members to take a moment to digest it all but I'm sure more will come along and comment.

A good designer with experience with CPC is always a good thing to seek out. There are quite a few here who should be able to help with finishing touches. J5 and @p5woody are great and I've worked with both before. There is also @ttttubby and I think @Quicksilver-75 is doing some designs also.

Chips look great so far, I would be a bit concerned about the red/pink and red/maroon chips getting mixed up on the table though. Red and Mandarin Red are very similar in person. Maybe do a light blue/blue or a dg Dolphin/light blue chip instead?

Love the Hermes chips, have a vintage look. Very nice.

Also please feel free to ask any questions you may have in the forums. A lot of knowledgeable members here, and no need to feel out of your depth, we all had to start somewhere :)

Thanks for the welcome to PCF and your thoughts on the designs!

Also, greatly appreciate your recommendation on designers. How should I go about obtaining designers? Should I attempt to reach out to the people you suggested or wait for people to offer their services?

I would pm the ones I've mentioned and see which one will be able to help :)

Welcome aboard!

It's @Johnny5 for J5, mentioned by stocky above.

Also @PokerChipsDesign does design work too.

Be sure to check out the gallery threads to see examples of the designers' work.

There's also a hall of fame voting thread open at present, which showcases some great sets.

Can't remember how many posts you need to take part but you can eyeball the sets anyway. :)

Also dependent on the extent of perfection sought, the CPC manufacturing process (extremely high heat and pressure) means that minor imperfections feature in the end product (such as tiny scratch marks on inlays).

I know there is a thread on this somewhere on CT, not sure about PCF.

I would request inlaid chip samples so that you have first hand experience of the chips. Personally, I love them. But once in a blue moon a customer gets disappointed by not attaining perfection in their custom set. They are a tiny -virtually non-existent- minority for sure but getting samples will help ensure you know what to expect.

I thought strip poker was played with clothing, not chips. :)

I urge you to ask those questions here, and don't be afraid to ask for clarifications if the answers you get are not clear to you. Lots of expertise on this forum, especially when it comes to custom sets.

I also strongly recommend that you get samples from CPC (mold samples and color samples) before you commit to a major chip purchase. Screen colors do not match actual chip colors, and mold selection makes a big difference in how chips both look and feel. Samples are the best investment you can make when it comes to ensuring you will actually like your custom chips.

This guy knows what he's talking about.

If your having trouble communicating on the phone to cpc I recommend emailing David. He almost always answers within the day.

I just ordered my first custom clay set (look up the sunset thread) from cpc and I couldn't be happier. I went with @Johnny5 as my designer. I hear the other ones are pretty good also.

Good Luck. As stated. Ask away.

a few quick chip design comments:

Agent Provocateur -- I think black inlays exhibit a much classier look than white, and for that reason, I'd go with black inlay and white silhouettes for the back side images. A standard round inlay allows for larger images.versus a shaped inlay (get samples of the shaped inlays if you are considering using them). I'd be concerned with having two (of only three) chips using a red-base color scheme -- I'd recommend that all three chips have distinctly different colors.

Hermes -- I'd go with Retro Blue instead.of dark blue (which is very dark, and not a very pretty color). And as much as I like charcoal chips, I might switch it to gray to get more contrast with your blue chip. If Hermes colors are orange/brown, you might consider replacing the pink chip with chocolate or light chocolate. Again, having color sample chips in-hand will help make these decisions easier. I don't think either design side would make for a good hot-stamp -- too much detail and fine lines.

I'll leave it to the designer(s) regarding potential copyright issues with the artwork for both the AP and Hermes designs.

With the advice so far, looks like you are well on your way to ironing out the last details, & will have a great set.

Welcome to PCF, you came to the right place...Always ALWAYS get sample sets on any chip you are looking at buying...The feel, sound, and weight very enough that you may like a mold better than another due to......(depends on you)..Also the colors look different in hand, I was designing a set and had two blue colors I liked then I got a sample set and loved to other blues that I will now go with those....

Have fun and dont settle on YOUR custom set..

You guys are great! Thank you so much for the tips, suggestions, and support. I thought I'd be difficult for an unknown member to elicit helpful responses, but it certainly is not the case here. I can also feel the experience and knowledge you guys have from the thoughtfulness of your responses. Feeling really grateful and optimistic about the project!

You're in the right place. Also while I do highly advocate getting samples I like the choice of the scroll mold for this set.

Make sure to use a professional for the art. It will make a world of difference.

When you receive your color sample set, oil the chips with a tiny, tiny bit of mineral oil, wipe them down with a towel, and let them air dry for a day or so. Oiled chips are more representative of what the colors will look like after the chips have been played with a time or two -- chips absorb oils from the skin.

I also like the scroll mold for this set, but the standard suggestion is to order a few samples of this mold and maybe one or two others that appeal to you. Chios on various molds usually feel and sound different.

Invest some money in samples -- customs are expensive. Take your time, get it right, and you'll have a set that you'll treasure for decades.

The scroll mold never really excited me, however in this particular case, these somehow look Perfect on the scroll mold, wouldn't use anything else!

I agree. I liked the idea of the scroll mold. Then when I got some samples it didn't do a lot for me. Plus the mold/inlay size weren't compatible with what I wanted to do.

@David First off, welcome! You obviously know now that you're in the right place, and I'm glad you've found us.

What I'd suggest is posting a separate thread for each of your sets. That way feedback on them doesn't get confused. In the meantime, a few brief thoughts...

- I need to echo what @abby99 and others have said about samples - get them (both color and mold samples) and consider them before finalizing your set. Anything less is straight foolishness.
- That Agent Provocateur set is about the classiest thing I can imagine for a strip poker set. Well done!
- The scroll mold is the *only* mold the AP set should consider using, and that inlay shape works delightfully well
- The H mold is obviously the right choice for the Hermes set
- Solids are great and absolutely have a place at the table. Just consider that spots on chips make stacks visually easier to count. That may or may not be important to you for your purposes.

For your first stab at custom sets, you're off to a GREAT start!

Oh, one more thing - please offer sample sets of your chips! I think these are going to turn out fantastic, and I'd (we'd?) love to have some of these for our collections!

What does this mean? I'd send one of each chip of the final product to the interested parties here? Would I ask who wants samples before I order so I know how many to order?

Wouldn't mind at all, but it does remind me of a conversation with the designer I'm working with being concerned about copyright. I didn't think it would be a problem since I didn't plan on distributing any of the chips (in any quantity), but I didn't plan on people being interested in having one of these chips. Good thing he suggested making some changes to the design. I'll reveal the final product before I order.

Sample sets are a nicety many members of the community do when they make a new set. Basically you figure out how many people are interested in a sample when you place the order and get additional chips totaling that amount. You collect money from all the interested people equalling the production cost of the chips plus shipping expenses including packaging. You are responsible for mailing them out when they come in so there is some hassle involved on your part.

Definitely not something you are obligated to do, but something a lot of people offer around here for all the collectors.

Thanks for the explanation @Mr Tree.

All the nice people in this community, like yourself, going out of your way to help me makes it difficult to say no to such a reasonable request.

@Psypher1000 and @Blaster thanks for the comments on the mold choice. The mold itself was the inspiration of the chips. I wanted to do something that would make it look like the mold was created for a particular chip.

Some of us wonder in here for a little advice on a table build and find ourselves still hanging out five years and many $$$$ less later [emoji1][emoji51]

The Scroll mold is " curvy " ... :D

Did these chips ever get made?
Not yet, but I haven't given up on them. I put it off for a little bit and now I'm back to tweaking things here and there. I'm still as excited about them as I was 10 months ago and I haven't forgotten about you guys either.

Once I'm ready to order, I'll make sure to post the final designs and see if anyone wants sample sets.
