It has been a crazy few weeks. I guess this is a rant, but here it is.
On November 5, 2024, my wife was driving home from work and stopped at a red light. The light turned green and she drove into the intersection. A driver in the opposite direction crossed the center line and hit the front left (driver's side) corner of her car. Damage, $2,200.
December 1, 2024 -- I installed a dashboard camera in my wife's car.
December 7, 2024 -- My wife was driving her car to the store and proceeded straight through an intersection with a green light. A very young driver in the opposite direction turned left into my wife's car, sending my wife to the hospital with minor injuries and totaling the car. A witness stopped and waited for police to arrive. In this case, the other car was a 90s Chevy Blazer, so basically a tank.
Despite being up all night at the hospital, we still boarded a flight to Florida at 8 a.m. Sunday. Twelve hundred safe air miles later, we were headed to the beach. I half expected we'd get hit on the runway by another plane turning left.
So in the past ten years, my wife has owned and driven four cars, each destroyed in an accident which was not her fault. One new car was destroyed in an accident 28 days after we bought it. This latest car was 3 years old and was hit twice in 32 days. We don't get the extended warranty anymore. Based on our experience, the lifespan of a new car in our area -- before it gets demolished in an accident -- is about 2 years. Jeeps in World War II had a longer life expectancy.
End of rant. Back to happy thoughts.
