What are „dibs“?! (2 Viewers)

as we are getting everyone on the table.....

STOP bumping the thread by posting SOLD.

Just close the thread and mark as sold.
How else will they know I sold something? The “Sold” thread header???:unsure::unsure: Ok ok I’ll stop:p

Hmm tricky one... several thoughts here... 1) in a lot where the seller says not splitting st this time, almost instantly every time buyers start saying dibs on this piece or that if split... I don't see any issues with that! But sometimes one or 2 pieces of that lot are not taken and that dibs can drag out for weeks or even months... this recently occurred with a lot that @Zmasterben was selling of PCAs, over time buyers found what they needed elsewhere and backed out of their dibs. I think that is acceptable.

Note 2) I recently called dibs on a rack that the seller wasn't clear in my opinion about splitting and wanted to sell both racks. He contacted me, said not interested in splitting at this time. No harm... that's fine a few hours later he said willing to split if both are spoken for but at that point shipping was not included... changing the price per rack obviously. I feel that if you change the agreement thats potential buyer should have the right to release dibs if they do not agree to the change within the sale.

3) the slippery slope of overseas shipping, we are all aware that shipping prices can be drastically higher going overseas, being that this community is international in my opinion the seller should state that they are not in north america but understand that it is not required... you should check where the seller is located and if you fail to do so, suck it up and honor your dibs. I have seen many buyers say dibs depending on shipping which I feel is a fair statement to make and you should make your decision in a timely manner, anyone has the right to say back up at which point it would be their if it falls through.

Other than those circumstances, just my opinion but "Dibs" should be binding unless you work it out with the seller to release that claim. This market place like any other, craiglist, eBay buy it now, is a first come first serve and I personally think "dibs/PM coming/ or some other comment to mark your place in line" are necessary to protect the seller from being forced with a choice that could end up discrediting their reputation... again just my 2 cents on the matter!

Sorry for the wall of text!! As always fellow chipper Ben AKA @UScollector!! Lmao

I hate how someone puts in dibs for someone else, who hasn't seen or responded to the thread yet. I think that should be outlawed

If it were my listing, I wouldn’t honor this. It isn’t an indication of interest from a buyer.

More often than not, the friend chimes in saying “nah, I have enough already”.

Asking for dibs can make sense if you are interested in a portion of set for sale if split up.

“Dibs on a rack of 5s if split”

I think that, in good faith, there 's a factor of "dibs" built-in in any sale ad, meaning that the first person who offers the money asked gets the item.

Unless the buyer clearly states right from the start "I will sell to whomever I like and not to the first person responding" (eg 'cause I 'm offering a ridiculously low price and can't trust members unknown to me against flipping over)

I thought this was the only time someone would call "dibs". Why would you call dibs on the entire purchase? Just tell said person that you're buying the entire listing.

Anyone who puts GLWS in a FS thread should mean you're buying it if it doesn't sell. It's cuz you jinx'd it.

:D

GLWS is partially a carryover of an old practice from the chiptalk site. It used to be standard practice for someone to quote the sale OP with a "GLWS" as a way of maintaining the original sale terms / prices.

When are we changing the name of this place to poker chip classifieds and arguments forum
I'm tired of the arguments too. But it seems to me that the primary function of this site is the classifieds. If the hobby is truly a cycle of acquiring, admiring, and releasing chips, then the classifieds are the lifeblood of the community. You'd disagree, I assume?

It's not a bad thing or a good thing. For me, it's just what it is.

i haven't been paying much attention to the classifieds lately.

I always thought saying 'Dibs' was obligating that person to buy the item. And NOT an option to maybe purchase but they want to think about it.
My only 'dibs' peeve has been people saying dibs and tagging someone else.

Only to have the tagged person say 'no, im good'

Has the risk of killing a sale for the seller. As a potential buyer may see the dibs post and move on, not to return.
....to add to that. I always felt like if you say dibs, you're buying it. Period. even if you're tagging someone. You saying dibs just means you're buying if for your friend.

Obviously this isn't happening. But my utopian brain thinks it should.

I stopped reading the thread after these three posts by a man who speaks the truth. “Dibs” should be word filtered out of the site and you either buy them if you want them or attempt to communicate/negotiate via pm and run the risk of someone saying “I’ll take them” while you’re on the fence.

I know personally I’ve passed over a classified ad or two in the past when I saw “dibs” or “ dibs for _____” only to come back later and see a parade of people saying “no thanks”. Yeah, that’s on me as well, I could always send a pm to express interest, and I do now no matter what, but to me word is bond and if you say you want something in a situation where speed is often advantageous you should have to buy it. I’ve said many times in the past dibs should be binding and people who back out of it should be looked at the same as if someone backs out of a sale when everything is packaged up and ready to go. I would be fine with getting rid of likes and feedback if it could be replaced by a ratio of “said dibs: actually bought”. ;)

Fuck “dibs”. But if you say it follow it up with a paypal transaction and buy the chips. And super fuck “dibs for ______”, while I understand the concept if you want to make sure they get the chips buy them yourself and chop it up later.

Sales have worked in this community for a long time. There will always be differences of opinion. Let's not do this. We don't need another pointless thread that goes nowhere

POST MOAR PR0N...that's what we need to do

That’s a surprising comment. I would think that everyone would want to know the “approved” or “recommended” way to buy and sell in the marketplace. Especially considering the dollars that are thrown around here, and how competitive that area of the forum can be.

Build honest relationships...a new world (and chips) will open up

I know what you are saying, but not everyone wants to hang out on this site at all hours of the day to buy, sell and trade. Some people … as hard as it may be to believe … just want to build a single chip set and be done with it.

^^Let alone that not everybody can afford transcontinental or, even more so, intercontinental jet-set poker and chipping, to meet good people in person (however desirable that may be).:)
