What constitutes clay chips? (4 Viewers)

"Binding agents" is a nice way to say "plastic" without having to say "plastic". Sort of like how Glock says their guns are made out of "composite". Or like how McDonalds has a Q-ing Oven. The Q stands for Quality, and god help you if you ever refer to it as a microwave.
CPC's binding agents contain 0 plastic (zero)

Thanks @David Spragg for the setting the record straight.

Another key factor is compression vs non-compression and heat used during the molding process. Rather than me try to articulate that, get it wrong, and have someone correct me, can you also post the distinction in molding and heat between CPC, Paulson, and mass market (e.g. "china clay") chips?

I'm afraid not. Partly because in our case that is proprietory information, and partly because I can't say 100% on the other manufacturers except that Paulson's process is not dissimilar to ours - just needs less heat as it's got a lot of plastic. No clue what the chinese do.

Well it's surprising that I've only just now seen this post 3.5 years on and it needs considerable correction.

Plastic content of CPC chips is 0%. Just to clarify, that is zero.
Actual clay content is not 30% as stated somewhere else in this thread. The old CT post stated that NON clay content is about 30%. it's actually closer to 40%.
Try this
Clay - 60%
Other naturally occurring minerals/ingredients - 30 to 38%
Other ingredients (including the brass although you could argue that is mineral) 2 to 10%.

For info, Paulson now is around 50/50 clay & minerals/plastic
TRK was around 70/30
Thank you greatly for clarifying.
As a recent first time CPC owner I've wondered to myself just how much clay they had. I had mused that even if they had just 10% I'd be content. To read it is 50% clay/minerals has put a smile on my face, made these chips seem more special.

I recently got sample chips Majestic snd Pharaoh’s. Both are listed as “clay” chips, and from my reading of the forum, are called China clays. Fit, finish, and feel are awesome.

This was your chance to run and never come back.

So I’m starting to come to the conclusion that I’m going to need to buy more than one set of chips....

And now that moment has passed.

What we refer to as 'clay' is more about the process, rather than the material composition, i.e. a chip produced by compression molding.
Except from David's post it appears there is clay in them also. Probably not possible to inject with clay so compression must be used. And if you aren't using clay there's no point doing compression due to the cost involved.

Would be neat if we could move forward with certainty that clay chip equals 'clay content that is compression molded'. May have to exclude China clay from that treatment.

There’s also fibers added to compression chips, I’m guessing the fibers offer the same strengthening properties that fiberglass fibers add to concrete.

The fibers are what make the sharp edges look “fuzzy”.

Indeed. I was staring at them when oiling CPCs. Was wondering if they reduce with a little light wear.

And it’s crazy how that really shows with age. I’m still not sure why. But fresh off the press RHCs feel great - I don’t love the mold, but they feel like a nice clay chip. Give the a few years of casino use and they feel like plastic. It’s weird.

FWIW, one of my THCs (inlay replaced Aurora Stars) got caught in the hinge of my case and snapped. Here is what the inside looks like:

As I recall the AS chips were produced only 5-7 years ago if that? So this presumably is more representative of recently-produced Paulsons.

It’s flakier/fluffier looking than I expected.

Awesome pics. Thanks for sharing.
But, so sorry for your loss.

Gonna go grab some graham crackers now….

Are these label overs, label replacement, or milled?
I’m just always curious to what extent a chip is weakened by milling. It doesn’t look like that’s relevant to this accident, but just curious.

(Hey, still stands on edge!)

Not sure why the face/rolling edge is so much darker than the interior.
Interesting. Break one of ours and it will be the same color right through.
Can you break it again (lol) right through the edge spots. I'm curious how it looks inside at that point.

I’ll try! I have a vice in the woodshop adjoining the poker room…

Do you have any pics of snapped CPCs to compare?

Not to hand, I'll try and remember tomorrow. I did post some pics before though, all solid colors right through.
Here is a broken DG green solid that's been sat in my drawer for years though.

Still seems a strange texture. Notice the break in my pic shows pretty smooth clay.

Maybe it’s GPI’s special formula for “NAGB orders from people who think they’re fooling us but aren’t.”

(Some RPC colors have a weird tendency to smudge… New conspiracy theory of the company undermining stealth buys?)
