Tuesday night games happen every week. I host half of them. Game starts no later than 6:45 and ends at 10:00 sharp. This hasn't changed for over a decade.
Saturday night games happen 2nd, 4th and 5th Saturdays. Food at 6:45, game starts by 7:15. People come early some nights based on the menu leading to a little earlier starting times. Game ends when we get tired. This is an evolving thing. In the mid-2000's my games lasted late - say 1:00am to 5:00am. As we got older, the games get shorter. It is rare for a game to last till 2:00am, most commonly now we break around midnight.
Irregular $1/$2 games start 7:00 or 7:30 depending on the needs of the group. Almost always played on a week night. These games can last very late, typically ending at 3:00am - 4:00am. Two short tales:
This game was played in an unheated garage. My chips & cards, someone else provides the venue. His wife doesn't like the players and hates the smokers. We aren't very welcome in the house, so our bathroom is "out there, somewhere" (this is the country, not like an urban environment but still taking a dump in the "yard" is a little strange.) This game is in the dead of winter and very cold for Texas. Something like 15 degrees or so. So cold that the drinkers' glasses never need a refill on ice. One guy has polished off most of a bottle of whisky and comments that it is the same ice he started with at 7:00, but it is 3:00 and his bottle is drained.
One game has run extra long. It is past 5:00 and we are debating if it is worth it to get two hours sleep or if we should get on with the game till dawn. One of the attorney mentions he has court at 10:00. Normally he handles traffic and drunk driving cases, but this time he says it is the early part of a death penalty case. (let's just say, this guy would be my go-to guy if I got arrested late at night but no chance I would use him for something serious in a court.) It seems he got randomly "picked" to be the public defender for someone charged in a capital murder case. He figures that he is already drunk so sleep or no sleep the guy isn't going to get a good job from his lawyer. In that case, he votes we should keep on playing. We played till 7:00, when several of us had to go get kids and take them to school. No idea how the death penalty case turned out.
