Does anyone know what factory makes good Milanos?
They're pretty much impossible to get down here in New Zealand. I got some $1000 ones from Claysmith on Amazon and they're great, but that's the only denomination they ship to us. Everywhere else either doesn't ship down here or charges insane shipping rates.
I found some on Alibaba and ordered samples, but they're terrible in comparison. Labels aren't aligned, the material feels more plastic-y, colors are off, etc. The label is crisper, but that's about it with the positives.

So... where does Claysmith get them made? Or do they have their own factory? Are they still around?

And follow-up question: Is there one official vendor of Milanos? Are all the other ones illegitimate copies? And how would I find that out in this case?

To the best of my knowledge, there is only one manufacturer. What you are seeing is the unfortunate reality of China clays. There is going to be color and label variations between each run of chips. So if you buy an add-on a year after your first purchase it is very likely not going to be a 100% match.

Also, I am again no expert, but China clays seem to be becoming more plastic as time goes on, so think the manufacturer might have changed up the ingredients at some point.

Avoid that "china clay" crap at all costs. Awful and inconsistent quality.
If you like the design so much, have it made as a custom hybrid ceramic by "Tina" (contact the Broken Arrow or Apache vendors here), the cheapest yet very decent value option when it comes to "ceramics".

Yeah I don't know if they're made in different places but one of the big knocks on Milanos and china clays in general is the lack of consistency in every way imaginable - sometimes they're not even round. And though you'd think buying them all at once from the same vendor would give you the best chance at consistency, it doesn't always happen.

Milanos are shitty chips made from shitty materials in shitty Chinese factories for mere pennies each. They smell awful, and are likely bad for your health. If you can't get them in New Zealand, count your blessings.

Hey Dave, tell us how you really feel.. lol. I do agree with you though.

Unless the retail price of China Clay chips are cut in half, their time as a viable quality-to-cost ratio product is effectively over.
If you are going to get a Chinese budget product, then a custom Tina ceramic is your very best bet.
As forum supporters, BR Pro and SunFly also rate very highly, especially the former with turnaround time in the USA.
