Watching the Tonkawa eBay sale got me thinking about our fascination with the hundo.

None of the cash games I've ever played in ever needed $100 chips. Assuming this set caps at the $100 chip and the $500s are never found, why pay 3 to 1 for them (also assume $100 for a rack of $5 and $300 for a rack of $100)?
Wouldn't you rather have 3 more racks of $5s or $25s for your cash game? Would you play a single table tourney with your $100s?

I get the rarity. I get the beauty. I get the set completeness. I still think I'd pass at 3:1 and get more usable (in my case) quantity. What am I missing? Any high rollers here get a rack of $100 in play regularly?

A rack of $100's is basically the crown jewel of my cash set... they sit there and look beautiful... and maybe one day the game will grow to the point where they get used, who knows...

I don't even get $25's in play in my game yet I have 3 racks of them.. and a rack of $100's... does it make sense? Probably not.. but most collecting doesn't make sense!

I buy in for extra just to get some of my $20/$25 in play! lol

The $100 is usually my favorite chip in almost any chip set.

I keep saying I'm going to start a collection of barrels of different $100s, even for sets that I don't own. I need to start this collection.

Anyone have any minty PCA $100s to start me off on my journey? :)

I agree with all of your points and I’ve only ever had 1 $100 in play before and swore never to pay more than $2 a chip.

That still didn’t stop me from buying 20 trop Hundos at $8 a pop. It’s a disease.

I've been in plenty of games that can use the 100s and I'm sure that DCS, WBC, SOP, Truman's, etc all have games that use hundos.

I buy the big chips to make tournament sets with 25/100/500/1000/5000 - when the denoms are available. Big chips often have better colors and spots too.

The tournament purchase makes all the sense in the world. In the case of the Tonkawa it tops out at $100 which is why I asked about the cash set need.
I guess like a lot about this sickness/hobby it just comes down to lust for the "thing" :)

Hundos in play weekly, sometimes 500s. Depends on the set but some were cheaper than the $5 chips. Not all games and set owners are the same. Different strokes.

My game barely gets $25's in play, but I did buy a barrel of my favorite hundo (Aztar MO Secondary $100) for one of my cash sets just because I love the chip and felt it completed the set, but never expect them to get into play. My other cash sets cap out at the $20/$25. Like most, a barrel of hundos is a nice touch for completeness, but at least for me, a full rack isn't necessary.

We’re just creatures of excess. My game barely gets $20’s into play and even then it’s only to get some interesting big chips on the table, not for a lack of $5’s. And yet I still own a full rack $20’s. There’s no practical reason.
And am I satisfied with my short stack of $100 plaques that never have, never will see play? No. I want more.

Lol. I felt the same way initially, when I was uncertain higher denoms were even available for my set. Now I have 1800 x $5, 260 x $25 and 60 x $100.

Higher denoms FTW for all the reasons stated above, as well as future-proofing for inflation. Hell, if there was a $500 I'd get that too. Hey, you never know.

When you have multiple tables/floors and dealers handling banks/making change, the high denom chips are a necessity. I didn't really realize this until I saw Courage's crew working at DCS.

Also, anyone collecting $1s as tips, would want to color up.

I think the meet ups and huge MA games are more the exception though... my guess is that most who are hosting their friendly single table cash game don't require hundos, and if they did, not more than 1 barrel.

Agree with all the reasons above for why hundos are awesome. They usually make for some great looking chips. I'm really happy they are available and have 140 for my set. We play 5-5, 5-10 or 10-20 in my local currency and at that point they are really a necessity. I also have a decent amount of 500s. I originally had a barrel of 1k/5k which is not really needed for my games, but couldn't afford keeping them all because they werent used. Kept a few just for fun and collecting purposes though. The higher denoms really have some great colors and spots!

Most folks probably only need 1-2 barrels, but since he's selling by the rack then the buyer will need to eat the full rack cost initially and probably resell the rest.

Some folks do indeed need 80-100 $100 chips, and could use a barrel or two of $500's.

Others need $100 chips for tournament set purposes.

Plenty of legitimate use/need for them for the right folks.

And FWIW... those who are actually hosting 2/5, 5/10, or higher stakes games, probably aren't announcing it from the rooftops (or on internet forums), unless your name is Dan Bilzerian.

Money is a very private/personal matter. Sure, we are all happy to discuss our .05/.10, .25/.50, and 1/2 adventures. But getting beyond that probably starts crossing some folks' personal boundaries.

I'm sure there are just plenty of $100 and $500 chips getting into play in home games. But it's really none of our business.

I agree that the hundreds aren't needed and my home game actually doesn't yet need the $25's either (I have 3.5 barrels...but I bought a barrel of hundos anyway, just to fill out the Grand Victoria secondary set. Heck, I even bought a half barrel of $500's just because they look so awesome. Oh, and now I have a single oversized $1000 chip too but have decided to use it for the high hand chip, just to get it in play. I considered relabeling it with a matching GV "High Hand label"..still on the fence on that....I'll probably just leave it as is.

Our weekly big $1/3 game has about $7-8k on the table at any given time, wish there were more $5s in the set they use, but we had a rack of $25s in play and about 30x $100s. My new big game cash set has 600x $5s then jumps straight to $100s, most Cali casinos I’m used to don’t even have $20/25 chips in play for $1/3 or $2/5 games, just barrels of $5s then $100s.

Some people here have many sets worth 10s of thousands of dollars. If some people have $30k+ into chips, imagine how big they may like to play.

Also $100s on a 1-2 or 1-3 table are very common and that's usually the smallest spread game.

Our games are 20 NL. The Black $100 chips are always in play as $1. It is a great excuse to own and use these beauties.

It is true... the blacks are almost always my fave chip in any set.

I never need more then one barrel for my sets, and it's mainly because they are so pretty in a rack. Nothing more.

Even though i havent used them yet, I have a couple of barrels of 100s for 2 reasons.

1) for the potential big stakes game or a special event multi table game.

2) future inflation insurance. Heck, in 10 years, $5 could be micro stakes and I don't want to buy another set because the ones I have are discontinued.
