Not a Group Buy. The name that has been given to private individuals or small groups that were able to purchase custom sets from GPI through various means. Chips from GPI directly go for $1.50 to $2.00 (I think) but many have sold here for multiples of that as you no doubt have experienced. The term exists because some folks were disappointed at not being in the original groups and the subsequent markups that occurred when some sets were sold. Such behavior would be uncouth in a group buy, but these are not group buys.
I have no opinion in the matter but do root for more chips to be created, by whichever creative means people devise.

Seems extremely weird that noone's mentioned it, so maybe I'm off (feel free to correct me). Generally, bird cages are only meant for display and immediate areas, and not for travel. Even super bird cages wouldn't seem to be the best thing to use for bringing chips around. (gonna be a bit*h to pick up all those chips when you're carrying your two bird cages across the street and drop one. 1000 chips in the middle of a busy street, nope.)
I suppose it makes sense if you only have one main set that you have to use for home games as well as all away games, and you want to both display them and travel with them.

I should clarify: I meant transport as in taking it from one room to another, or upstairs to downstairs. Or even a short drive. Not across the country, or rigorous travel.
I plan not to ever use another birdcage to take chips out of my own home. That's what these are for...
I bought a few birdcages, forget from where. Definitely not sturdy enough to carry around one in each hand full of chips, handle will break off or something and chips flying everywhere. The couple times I used them to take chips to a home game I had to carry one birdcage at a time with one hand supporting the bottom.
When I bought all those Freddie's chips, they came with 3 birdcages from the casino. They were beat to hell, but very heavy-duty. Much thicker base, walls, handle, much sturdier construction. Those I would very comfortably swing around, full, one in each hand no problem.

Makes sense. You mentioned racks jiggling in the car, so I just assumed a travel set. Lol I still don't want to pick up 1k chips in the elevator or street, but bird cages are cool.
Even if money was a 0 factor, I think if chips are leaving the house almost all chippers would suggest some type of sturdy case, i.e. Pelican.
If money is a 0 factor, for home storage I'm sure there is a ton that others and you can/will do. Great options out there. Personally I'm pretty sure I'm eventually going with this for a set or two, or accessories (one of these filled with MSK plaques please!). Powder coated of course, with custom wording.
I think these only run about $7k (6 feet tall)
Definitely have to go the custom cabinet route with rolling trays, everything else is a detour leading to it

Hmm. I should make one just for the chips, could weld and powder coat the whole thing in house at work. Probably could even manufacture and assemble the door and locking mechanisms

Of course you can go the Pelican route but also Harbor Freight sells these beauties in bright colors and super almost bullet proof protection for your chippies!
The smaller Apache 3800 ($45)can hold up to 1,000 chips, the large 4800 ($60) can hold up to 1400 chips.
The 43mm Matsui or octagon racks will fit 1000 chips
2 more racks of chips coming to fill that nasty empty space.
Even stack nice, simple label maker and you can mark each one so you don't get confused.
Fully customizable and zero chips moving, extremely heavy duty, cheap and professional looking. Also the cases hve metal corners with lock holes if you want to lock the case while in play.

That was my first concern. Acrylic sheeting is about 15x stronger than glass, but due to discrepancies/cost cutting in manufacturing, they tend to be less shatter-resistant. 90% of the “acrylic” carriers are actually not true acrylic.
In our prototype of the carrier, we did 2 things to ensure durability: first, we molded the base and handle as one piece, so that there was no way for the base to break off from the weight. Second, we used a form of polycarbonate sheeting for the carrier cover, so it was much more impact resistant than acrylic. It adds a bit of weight, but will be about 5x more durable than real acrylic.
Let’s see! Fingers crossed.
Any idea on landed pricing yet?

Anyone doubt that we could easily reach 1000 on this, even with the last two GBs for birdcages? At $24, I'd take 10. 100 more takers for 10?

This will be my last true look at them, because I’ve found that my chip tastes have evolved, and I’ll be letting every single one of these go in an upcoming sale. I got most of them off-forum for an incredible deal, so I’ll be passing some of that on to those who want it.

Yep, almost the exact same mold. Same manufacturing house, I think. We just commissioned a slightly more durable material for them, and added a couple more notches for stability.

sorry; I think there’s a misunderstanding. I was just posting in my thread about what I was learning about chipping and some of my solutions. I have zero interest in coordinating a group buy, I really don’t have the time / inclination.
Once I get the prototype and see if it all works, I’m happy to pass on the manufacturer contact to someone who wants to deal with that.
Any way to get the honeycomb holders to be more transparent, so the chips can be displayed better?
