Hoping I can shed a little perspective for everyone.

Yesterday was the 6 year anniversary of my son being diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. He was diagnosed at 5, he is now 11 and over the last several months has lost his ability to walk. He just went back to school for the first time last week since March 13th, 2020. Instead of walking the halls like last year he now has to use a scooter to drive around. The estimated life span for kids with DMD is roughly their early 20s. Every day my wife and I have to help him with the basic tasks of getting dressed, moving from the table to the couch, showering, and using the bathroom. You would think that he would hate the world.... but he doesn't.... he loves life and he loves people.

For the last 195 weeks he has been part of a medical trial at Lurie Children's Hospital for a treatment called Exon Skipping. We live just outside Ann Arbor Michigan so for 83 straight weeks my wife and I alternated driving to Chicago for treatments. Luckily they approved home treatments starting in week 84 so we only have to travel once a month now. At 7 years old he was brave enough to give up his body to science and an experimental drug to try and help future generations not have to go through what he is. He went through two muscle biopsy surgeries and has been poked and prodded more than I can count.

One of the first people we met after getting diagnosed was another local family and the dad gave me a really important piece of advise. He said "you are going to meet a lot of people along this journey who are in the same boat as you, but not all of them will be good for you. You don't have to be their friend just because they are dealing with the same battle that you are. You will know who the good ones are right away when you meet them."

So here's my long winded relation to all of us here. Why are we here? Because we like poker and poker chips, it's a hobby. It's not life and death. It's the same advice that other dad gave me, probably 95% of the members here are good people that you will get along with, possibly meet up to play some cards, and maybe work a few deals to buy/sell/trade chips. Are there some bad apples, sure there are, they are everywhere in life. We are all from different backgrounds, different beliefs, different countries, different religions, etc. So if you run into someone that isn't good for you, it's simple, move along and stick to the people that make you happy.

We all have much bigger fish to fry in life. Family, kids, spouses, mortgages, sickness, jobs, and all of the other real world problems. A poker chip forum should be the least of our worries.

If you stuck with me this long, thank you, I hope that my words had a positive impact on you. If you stopped after the first sentence, that's ok also.

Wishing everyone peace and happiness. God knows we all need as much of it as we can get.

Ryan
Thank you VERY MUCH for sharing your story and putting this into perspective.

Thoughts and prayers for your son and your family!!

Unfortunately, most of the vaults I'd love to shop in are tough nuts to crack!

But people are definitely very very kind to me. Wait until you see what I bought yesterday!!! :)

I think some nuts are just better left uncracked. Suffice to say, seeing them on the outside alone is enough.

Are you for hire? Can folks order chips through you for an up charge fee?

Could be a forum vendor actually. “Labeled an asshat? Cant find poker chips on pokerchipforum.com? Now you can for just 10%!”

I've noticed in my adulthood that most resources on earth are decreasing, save one. Envy. It is available in abundance, and more every day. It's apparent everywhere, even in this forum. Heck, especially in this forum. It's uncommon to see people who are genuinely happy for somebody else's deal or score or chip set when they are seeking the same thing.

While your post was well written and mindful, I beg to differ on the envy part of it. What this forum does have is an abundance of good people, people who genuinely get excited to form relationships with others using chips as the seed. I can vouch for that myself and I'm sure many others can. This forum has been a connecting point to some of my daily relationships with people whom I cherish as amazing friends. First it was just playing poker, and the next thing you know we're all chippers in the same boat sharing our new acquisitions with each other the same way kids share their new toys with one another and sometimes with even more enthusiasm lol Uncommon to see people genuinely happy for someone else's score? Absolutely not. It's very common. There's a bevy of people here that will tell you they've witnessed it with their own eyes. Envy exists in everybody to a certain extent and it can often times be a driving force for people who want to improve on themselves or even obtain what they don't have. Expressing themselves in a certain manner, putting their two cents on the table, or offering a different perspective doesn't qualify these people as being envious and having a jaundiced view towards other chippers. I see the opposite of that 99% of the time and to say that it's prevalent "especially" in this forum is in my opinion a bit unfair to the majority.

I don't think I'm envious of other members' chips anymore. Maybe in the very beginning when I started with zero. But I'd like to think that I've matured in that aspect, where I can curate my own stuff and just be happy for those who are able to acquire what they want. Sure, there's a little competition, but as poker enthusiasts we should be able to put up with that, eh?
Keep on chipping!
