I applied this exact scenario to my life as it is right now, not as a hypothetical as if money was not an issue.

Money is frequently potentially an issue for me. If I have 1 $10k set and money becomes tight, that set has to go.

If I have 10 sets, I can get rid of a few here and there. If my tastes change, I can rotate some out.

With the one set it’s all or nothing. I’d be more likely to end up with nothing.

Plus I love chips. Moar chips. I also only have the capacity to host 1 table, so there’s plenty of good 300-500 chip sets for $2-4 per chip I could build to host 1 table games.

If moving the numbers then I’ll choose B out of these particular options. Although I think 4 sets is a better split vs 10. That way the quality can be high for all… plus 10 sets is a lot. Granted I have a few more than that now I’m sure but I can admit it is too many.
Yeah, 10 sets @ 1k each doesn’t equate to 10 nice sets. If we’re talking 2-4 sets, that changes things significantly. 10 sets is realistically way more than I’d ever need in any case (I own exactly 10 atm and it’s honestly too much).

In that case, it’s d happily take 1x nice CPC Set, 1x NAGB Set and 1x leaded casino set over a single grail set.

Sorry just one grail set will never work for me, I need to rotate and mix thing up here and there.

My end game is to have 6 grail / keeper sets, that’s the reason I own so many set because I not sure what is my preferred sets are, the chipping journey is about exploring and finding out what u like

Also so far I think I found 3 Keeper sets but u never know when my taste will change in the future
This pretty much sums up my position exactly...

If I were ever selling something and had multiple buyers/interest, you would be near the top of the list.

Regularly host, you share updates/photos of hosting, you rotate chip sets, and your setup looks meaningful.

Everyone can chip and collect however best suits them, but in my subjective opinion you’re doing it right and I’d always be happy selling to your house.

Who would only want one set of chips????

I’m not sure how to vote here. I have 15-ish sets, at least 6-9 of which are grail-ish, and many of which likely exceed the $10k value cap based on where prices have gone. (Hell, it would take life-changing money for me to even consider selling one of my TRK sets…and I mean life-changing.)

I abstain.

No, I don’t. I guess I agree with the folks that make the point that I’d rather have some variety, and thus more than one set. But I’m a grail guy, so grail it is.

I recently wrestled with this a lot, after buying and selling lots of different things I have concluded hard A. I will still want a small variety of options for cash vs tournament etc. but I have a grail set (for me) and I just want to spend the most time on the felt with it. Soon I will also be purging much of what I have. There are other things to spend money on and I don't feel the need to buy/have more to compete with the set I love most.

^ This is sorta my position, too.

Personally, I went the '"ten grail sets" route (which wasn't a poll option). Eventually sold most of them, however.

And I don't think "10 great sets for $10k" is a real thing any more, with today's prices. A single 'great' set typically can run anywhere from $2000-$5000 depending on quantity.

I don't think I own any grail sets. Dunes, PCA ? I think maybe someday some of the sets I've put together might attain grail status in some people's eyes, but I don't really care about their status. When I think of a set that I want real bad, I guess that is the set I bestow Grail status to. That would be clay Condado Beach. Would I want a clay Condado Beach set vs 10 other sets ? and I guess that means I have to give up all my other sets. I don't like this thread, but I'd probably go with 10 sets to start, and build from there.

I think this is where “great” becomes subjective.

I think the three sets I have are great, all clay, and I’m well under $3k invested/retail price for all 3 sets.

The size of the sets, either the grail or 10 great (title says nice, OP says both good and great) come into play as well. A great set for someone who only spreads one low limit table is different from a great set for someone running more tables or higher stakes.

i realized in my chipping journey I care more about quality than quantity, and pruned heavily down.

Now, it’s hard to say that with a straight face when I literally just placed a Tina order.

So what does one call a set that they really like, and really enjoy playing with?

Is it a good set? A great set? I dunno the answer, but I suspect it lies somewhere between the two in the eyes of the owner.

And I'm not sure I'm qualified to disagree with them. What is a great set to me might not be to you, and vice-versus. And that's okay.... we can both be right, in our own little worlds.

For me, I would rather have one grail set. I personally don’t collect sets. I only need one quality cash and one quality tournament set. I’m not the person to have $10k or more into sets. I wouldn’t display them. The people I play with don’t care about the quality of the chips. They would just sit in boxes on shelves. To what end? To take them out and look at them from time to time? Bragging rights? I’m building a Paulson RHC set. None of my friends care. lol. They just ask me what’s wrong with the Tina set we use.

One grail !! - would love to be able to play one Paulson thc old school cash cali set

I was a bit confused by the question, so I bought 10 grail sets and called it a day.. am I doing this right?
You just won PCF. Congrats. Now you respawn as a new account and start again with a different profile pic and name and do it again.

I wouldn't be able to pick just 1 set and be happy. I think I'm on the 10 nice sets boat.... Considering I think I'm pretty darn close already. Maybe this will change overtime. This Harrah's casino sets have been looking real nice to me all cleaned up though. I wouldn't call it a Grail set but it's definitely one that I'll be happy to have and reluctant to give up. Maybe in acquiring a bunch of sets you inadvertently end up with a few sorta Grails mixed in and then can trim a little. But I love the variety and the ability to rotate chips.

This hypothetical scenario is somewhat real for me. I'm putting the finishing touches on a grail set right now (Binion's WSOP Paulsons) that will be quite valuable. Do I have any intention of selling? No. Can I categorically say that I would refuse an offer if someone offered me an absurd amount of money that would let me complete numerous other project sets that are also unique and valuable and still have some significant cash left offer? No.
